how is this accurate because not all weighted categories are equal and could therefore be weighing down a grade i have a 64% in my homework grade however that is only 10% of my grade but since the final is not in it would be the average of the other categories and a categories and a category like this would significance on my grade now than after the final

Roger: Good insight! That’s exactly right, and the calculator takes that into account. For example, if you have a 40% Final Exam category, a 30% Homework category, and a 30% Tests category, then your Homework and Tests category would really be 50% each, until after the Final. The remaining categories seem to be worth more than they really are, until the Final Exam category joins the mix as well. Another way to think about it is: If you have 0 points out of 0 points in the Final Exam category, we can’t really say that is equal to a 100% or a 0% or any other number (if you’re interested, read about indeterminate forms). But, let’s say that your Tests and Homework categories put your current average grade at 85%. If you just pretend that the 0/0 in your Final Exam category is actually 85% too, then it’s as if your total grade really is 85%. And that isn’t such a terrible assumption, because if you’ve been getting 85% in the class so far, you’re probably going to get around an 85% on the Final too, right? Hope that helps.

I have 96.21% in the class. Our final grade is in a cumulative sections with all our other quizzes and tests. I have a 91.95% in that category and it is 40% of the class grade. What do I need on the final to get at least a 94% on my overall grade?

Roger: It depends on how much your final is worth in comparison to all the other things in that category. Is it based on point values?
