Finals...YAY -_-
Wed, 23 Jan 2013 00:16:12 GMT

Hey Roger, thanks for the calculator!!:)
1) For my AP World grade, a 1000 point system is used--1000 points a semester. I currently have a 89.4 and I really want to get it to a 90, A-. We only have 30 points left and I did about 20 points or so worth of extra credit-- is there any way at all I can get to a 90?? please, I'd really appreciate it :)
2) Also, I think there was a mix up or something with the "motivational" messages :) when I got like 85.34 % it said "screw studying you'll do fine"; when I got less than that (82% or something like that) it said "you'll do fine, but perhaps not"....I don't know if it was supposed 2 happen like that or not, just thought I'd let u know :)
Thanks again Roger!! :)

Roger: Well 30 points out of 1000 will help you very much at all. 20 points of extra credit will boost your grade by about 0.2%, more or less. I suggest you talk to your teacher about your situation. And the messages at the end were really just haphazardly added on a whim. Haha.

I have participation graded in my math class and it is 10% of my grade. I currently have a 92% in participation and a 90.58% for my overall class grade. My final is worth 10% of my grade also. If my participation went up to 100% what % on my final would get me a 93% in the class?

Roger: Getting from a 92%->100% in your partition category will boost your grade by 0.8% giving you a 91.38%. You can calculate the rest with the calculator.

Roger,
I have finals this week. My grade is a 90.85% right now, but we have a test before the final. I have a 83.55% in tests (320 points out of 383 max), which is 20% of the grade. If I get a 50/44 on this test (extra credit available), what can i get on the final to get a 89.5?

Roger: Well, how much of your grade is your Final worth?

Roger,
thank you so much, this was very helpful.
I've been stressing out about my science final exam (I have a 60% currently) and was worried I would fail, and turns out in order to pass the course I only need to get 15 % on the exam. This made my stress level go way down and I'm not as freaked about it anymore. Thanks for the peace of mind.

In three of my classes I am currently at a 77%, I have for each one a summative worth 10 % and an exam worth 20 % what would I need to get on each one to get an 80%?

Roger: You need to average an 87% on them.

ALso, for my chemistry class, the same situation goes as my math class. Tests are 55% and labs are 45%. my overall grade is a 79.8. The final is 56 points and not its own category.. how do i calcluate??

In my math class, our final is not a separate category. I currently have a 68.13 as my overall grade. Homework counts as 15% and tests count as 85%... Our final is 100 points and usually tests are 40 or 50 points. How can i calculate what i need to get on the test to raise my grade?

Roger: For both this question and your Chemistry class, how many points do you have in your test category already? And what is your current Test average?

I have a complicated situation. We've had four tests throughout the year, worth 20% altogether. My last test I got a 63%, leaving me with a final overall grade of 68. For our final exam, our teacher said the mark we get on our exam would REPLACE our final test mark. The final is worth 30% by itself. What would I need to get around a 78%-80% on my overall grade?

Roger: I need to know 1) how many tests you have taken, 2) how much is your Test category worth, and 3) your current Test average.

So, I'm disappointed..I have 2 A-'s, both low (91.5, 90.7) and I'm not positive how much either of my finals are worth (between 10% and 15%) and it just seems far out that I need to get, basically, 100+% on both of them to even remotely get close to 92.5%

I guess what I'm trying to get at is if you're positive that those calculations are correct? WORRIED.

Roger: Yes, they are correct. Getting to a 92.5% means an increase of over 1% which is very difficult when you already have an A.

LOL
Mon, 21 Jan 2013 00:35:24 GMT

Doesn't it annoy the hell out of you that even after you set up the calculator and explained how to use it, so many people can't figure it out and you have to do the math manually for them?

Hello, I am sitting at around a 34% right now, I have a summative coming up that's worth 10% of my grade, and a exam that's worth 20%. Lets say I can get a 90% on the exam what would I need to get on my summative for a mark of 48%?( I think my teacher would pass me with that).

Roger: You would need a 62% on the summative.

projects: none
quizzes: one other, 13.5/14

Roger: So right now your non-project/quiz grade is a 87.2% and you need an 96.86% weighted average on your project and quizzes to get that to a 93% overall. The good thing is that your one quiz is already a 96.42%, so good luck.

I have a 90% in my math class right now and I want to maintain that. My exam is worth 20% so what mark do I need to stay there?

Roger: You need a 90% on the exam.

Hey roger, I was just wondering if this works for semester exams? As in quarter one is 40%, quarter two is 40% and my final exam is worth 20% . I've been averaging my two quarter grades to input into the 'current grade' section and input 20% for the percent of my final . Does your calculator accurately do this calculation? Or do I need another formula??

Roger: Yes, this calculator will give you an accurate result for your situation.

so, I have a 89.09% in business this semester. I still have a project due out of 100 (40% of grade) and two quizzes out of 18 and 16 respectively (20%). What do I need to get a 93?

Roger: Is the project worth the whole 40% or does it share the category with other projects? Are both quizzes 20% each or do they share the category with other quizzes? If so, how many other projects or quizzes do you have? Is there no final exam?

Hi Roger,

I'm very interested in the math o this. Can you explain it a bit more? I'm not sure what indeterminate forms are and how that relates to finals.

Thanks,
Phi

Roger: Well basically, let’s say that your class is 80% classwork and 20% final exam, and that you have a 90% in your classwork category while the “final” category remains at 0 points out of 0. It makes more sense to say that your “current” grade is a 90%, even though 90% of 80% is only 72%. In this case, a 0/0 is not counted as a 0% nor a 100%, but as indeterminate which means that it should not affect your grade. Therefore, it is also counted as 90%, even though you haven’t taken any final yet. That way, .90 * .80 + .90 * .20 = 90% works out.

The idea of indeterminate forms goes a bit beyond this, but Wikipedia will give you a good definition.

Fri, 18 Jan 2013 22:22:58 GMT

I have a 74.66% in my class... I didn't do a project that was worth 15% of my grade.. How much will my grade go down with a 0 on that project ? & what will I end up with going into my final ??

This is the chart of class grades & stuff...

Category Perc of Grade Points Max percent

Class Participation 10.00% 85.00 100 85.00%
Final Exam 20.00% 0.00 0 0.00%
Homework 15.00% 254.00 484 52.47%
Project 15.00%. 0.00 0 0.00%
Tests. 40.00%. 201.00 250 80.40%
Total 74.66%

Roger: Well right now, you have a 85% of 10% + 52.47% of 15% + 80.40% of 40% = 60.66%. What do you want on the Final? Let’s say you’re aiming for a 60, then you would put in [60.66, 60, 20] into the calculator and get 57.36%.

Hey Roger! Thanks you so much for the site! I have to get an 88.2 to get an 89 in the class, and the teacher says that if I got an 89, she would round to a 90. I just took the final, and I'm hoping for the best!

Hey Roger, i don't understand why i would need 105 on my exam (which for my grammar class, isn't possible) to get a 95. I already have an A but i want a higher A. Please explain, I would be much appreciated.

Roger: Well, when you already have a really high grade, you need an even higher grade to get it to go up. It is just easier to make it go down than to get it to go up. Conversely, if you have a 10% in the class, it will take a very very low grade to get it to go any lower.

HEY ROGER! :)
its me again, i saw ur comment up there and thanks! :) so, do u think i'll pass on my Bio class? cause i have 46.51% and it says that i need to get 64 on my final to get 50.
cause on our unit tests( and yes im high school) i mostly got 40's and the rarest thing is 60.
im trying to catch up but what do you think?
and if i did pass, since i'll be taking nursing on college, will the universities take my 50 flat grade on Bio?

im looking forward for your opinion sir :)

Roger: Hello. If you can get a 64 on the Biology Final, you will be able to pass! My first year in Biology, I needed a 100% on the Final to get the grade I wanted, so I studied all day and night. I ended up with only a 93% on the Final, but the experience really helped me in my second and third year of high school Biology. I think it is important to focus on the learning and not the grade, for the time being. Good luck with your universities though! They usually assign college credit only for AP-level or equivalent standardized testing, but it depends on the university.

Ok. Let me explain this! I have a 89.15 in my business class! I really need a 90! There is a project which is worth 70 points. What do i need on the project to get an A?
There are a total of 1,084 points in the class(with the 70 points included)
Please help! Thanks!

Roger: To get a 89.5% you need a 66.18/70. To get a 90%, you need a 71.6/70.
