Does a C in AP Physics I effect my chances of getting into an engineering college? I want to do computer science/engineering as my major. I have never taken a physics course prior to this one, so it has been very hard for me to get a good grade in this class throughout this semester. Not to mention, it is a well-known fact that AP Physics I is the hardest course in my school. I am also in my junior year of high school, so will this one C represent a "downward trend" even if I get all As in the rest of my four AP classes? Or will this show my willingness to "challenge myself" and take tough courses? Will this C make admission officers see me as "not fit" to go into the engineering field, or will they be more sympathetic, especially since I have never taken a physics course prior to this one, and the fact that I have never received a C in a class before this one?

Roger: Physics has almost nothing to do with computer science (with possibly the exception of computer graphics and scientific modeling). Computer engineering (and electrical engineering, in general) is based on electricity and magnetism, but perhaps not in the same way as they’re taught in AP Physics. Have you considered taking AP Physics II or the SAT II Subject Test in Physics? That could make the difference between “I’m bad at physics” and “I’m bad at physics, but I love it and won’t give up”. You should also be aware that most colleges will have databases of historical data about the classes and grade distributions for your particular high school. So if a class is known to be particularly hard, it’s possible that your future college will know about it. Anyway, how are you doing in AP Chemistry and/or AP Biology?
