Hi i currently have a 77.5 in a class and need to bring it up to a 79.5. Is this mathematically possible? We have had one test so far worth 50% of grade, and i got a 77 on that. I have two more tests this quarter, each test being 100 points. i also have the final worth 20%. My quiz average is 73. We have no more quizzes this semester so my quiz average is basically fixed. quizzes are 25% of grade.

Roger: What’s the remaining 5% of your grade? I’ll assume you have a 5% participation category and that your participation grade is 100%. In that case, you’ll need to average at least a 81.4% on your 2nd test, 3rd test, and your final exam to get a 79.5% overall.

Hey Roger, I just want to say that you should fix this website where you couldn't post innapropriate comments. Apparantley, a bunch of stupid people like to comment stupid stuff because they obviously have no life. I feel sorry for you because this website is so helpful for me. don't kick out of the comments section Roger, I legit need help. I have a 92% in calc and I took a test worth 100 points and got an 88. All the tests in my class are worth a hundred points and they are worth 80% of my grade, I have taken 4 tests and my average is 92% without my test added in, what will i have in my class?

Roger: The exact answer depends on whether you have any empty categories in your grade (like a “final exam” category that has no score yet). If you don’t have any empty categories, then your overall grade should drop to a 91.4%.

Did you mean that your 2 assignments belong to a category which, combined with many other assignments, is altogether worth 30% of your grade? In that case, I need to know (1) your current average score in that category, (2) how many other assignments you’ve completed in that category, (3) whether each assignment in the category is worth an equal fraction of the total 30%, and (4) whether you have any empty categories in your grade, like a participation category that has no score yet.

Roger: Well, I don’t go to school anymore. But when I went to college, I was a teaching assistant for about 2.5 years (does that count as a job?). I never had trouble focusing, as long as my workspace wasn’t cluttered and I had some music. If I have to read something, then I pick music without lyrics so it doesn’t jumble up the words I’m reading. I noticed that different work required different levels of focus. I needed the most intense focus when studying math-heavy stuff (like digital signal processing and machine learning), but I didn’t need to be very focused for regular homework or administrative TA stuff. So, I would schedule tasks according to how focused I felt at the time. For me, working on hard stuff without enough focus is just a waste of time (and it’s even worse if lacking focus causes careless mistakes). In school, I did the minimum work required to get the grade I wanted. The rest of my time went into miscellaneous TA stuff or side projects.

Ok so, what if my final is the same score as everything else, every assignment has the same weight, what do I do?

Also, since you mentioned you’re making up a test, does that mean your test grade will replace an existing test grade? Does your “48%” current grade include a zero, which would be replaced by your test grade?

hypothetically speaking lets say someone has a 92 percent in their honors college trigonometry class and they want to keep a 90 percent in the class. There final is worth ten percent of their grade then they will need at least a 72 percent on their test to keep their A. If they want to stay at a 92 percent they will need the equivalent, a 92 percent. However, it is meaningless because their tests are worth 45 percent of their grade so if they do bad on their final it will not effect their grade nearly at all so they should stop stressing and sleep.

if I have a 64.66 % percent in math which is a d and I need to get it to a c- . Each homework I get is 20% and if I turn in 2 tomorrow which is out of 5 would that bring my grade up? Also like I said each homework is 20% of my grade . So would it bring it up to a c- which is 70%

Roger: So you’re saying that each one of your homework assignments is worth 20% (e.g. one fifth) of your grade? In that case, you could only have a maximum of 5 homework assignments (no tests, quizzes, whatever else). I’ll assume that you’ve turned in 3 homework assignments already. In that case, if you get 100% on your next two homework assignments, your grade should go up to a 78.8%. But I find all this very hard to believe (did you mean instead that your “homework” category is worth 20% of your grade?).

We are only graded on our exams! to pass the class with an 80-85% what percentage would I have to get on the final? the final is worth 300 points.
