hi

I am international student and got A* in all my subjects in 11th grade following Cambridge examination Does it matter in GPA calculation isnce UC application won't allow to enter other than A in your academic records

Thanks

Roger: I’m not entirely sure. Here’s what they have to say regarding international applicants. Hope that helps.

Do UCs limit to only 8 honors courses or is it just the calculator above?
Thanks!

Roger: Check out this explanation about the 8 honors courses.

I currently have a 2.7 GPA. I am on my last semester with an A on a 6 credit course. What would my final GPA be?

Hi, I was just wondering how exactly this scale works. It seems to be punishing me for taking more classes and getting A's. Since the AP Honors GPA is capped a person who take less classes and gets A's will have a higher GPA than a person who takes more classes and gets A's. I was just wondering what classes to count and which ones not to. For some reason this calculator seems a little bit weird. Thank You

Roger: That’s exactly correct. As far as I know, the weighted and capped UC GPA isn’t something that college admissions actually looks at. It is computed after they’ve already made their decision, so that it can be used for public data and statistical analysis. If it were not capped, then you’d get a bunch of outliers, representing the students who managed to fit a bunch of extra-point 5.0 courses on their transcript.

Okkkkkkkkkkkk How long is 1 Semester? Does the calculator include elective grades or just core classes????!!

W/O Electives I have had FINAL (idk what semester is) grades of: 5 As 5 Bs 1C, If semester is 2 halves of a year then it'll be 10 As, 10 Bs, 2C. If electives are included, then it will be 9 As, (or 18???!!)

Please, Major: Biological Sciences. Will I get in?!

I took 4 APs so far ( I am a junior) and will take 5 next year. SAT: 2330

Roger: A semester should be half of the school year. Your electives should be included. (Also, are you using the UC Freshmen Admissions Calculator?)

How do UC's select which 8 semesters are counted towards your UC gpa?

Roger: It doesn’t actually matter which ones count, if you think about it.

Hi Roger,

My sophomore year, I took Algebra 2 honors, English honors, Bio (not honors), French 2, intermediate dance, beginning drama and I got As in all of them. My junior year I took AP English, pre-calc honors, AP Psychology, French 3 honors, Chemistry (not honors), USHistory (not honors) and I got As in all of my classes. Do you know my GPA? I am am officer for 2 major clubs, and I am active in volunteer work and sports. I was student of the month 3 times and I can get excellent teacher recommendations. What are my chances of getting into UC Davis? UCLA? UCI?

Roger: Have you tried putting that into the UC Freshmen Admissions Calculator?

Hey Roger, so for in-state residents, do UC schools only take into account 8 semesters of honors courses. so far, (I'm going into junior year) Ive taken a valid UC honors course and and AP course, and next year I plan on taking 3 AP courses. That'd be 10 semesters, would that be calculated? Would that mean that one of my AP's next year won't count in the weighted GPA?

Thanks in advance!

Roger: It won’t counted toward the weighted and capped GPA, which is capped at 8 semesters. That doesn’t mean it won’t count on your application, which is evaluated holistically.

Hey roger, do you know if community college course grades count as 1 semester or 2 on here? As in, do they count as two 5's or one 5 if I get an A in one class?

Roger: I don’t know the specifics, but if you only received 1 grade from the course, then it should only count once right?

Are honors classes weighted or just AP classes? I took 3 honors classes my junior year but no honors. I have all A's, but up until now i was thinking that honors classes were weighted and I could get above a 4.0. but now... please help!

Roger: If you go to a California high school, you can see a list of approved honors courses for your school using this tool. Otherwise, you can review the general guidelines for approved honors courses.

Hey Roger,

So I got a UC GPA of 3.74, do you consider that good?

However i got a C in Hnrs. Physics, and that scares me when applying to any of the UC engineering programs, will this C hurt me alot?
Im freaking out and would love some advice

Thanks

Roger: I think that when you’re applying to any kind of engineering major, your physics grade will be important. Maybe try making it up with a great score in AP Physics?

I got 3.0 GPA in my Freshman but now in Sophomore year I failed, I've got 2.5 GPA. I'm so scared that I cannot apply into any Cal State or UC. Is it in Junior year I can make up and I'll be accepted it? I asked many advisors and they tell me it's hard but I have 50% because I still not take SAT or ACT. What should I do?

Hi Roger, freshman year I got a 3.0 both semesters, and sophomore year 1st semester i got a 3.3. I'm currently at a 3.6 right now, but if I get a C in my Chemistry class I will be at a 3.5. So far from me telling you my GPA what UC's do I have a shot at?

Roger: Have you tried the UC Freshmen Admissions Calculator?

Hi! I have taken CC courses and was just wondering will that be included in my high school gpa to when I submit to ucs? I have taken 4 CC courses and have also taken 6 AP classes ( 3 in 2 semesters) which add up to 10 honors. However, my grades at CC are higher than some of the ones I took in HS. So, my last question is, can we choose what AP/HONORS courses we want to be counted in the uc gpa? or do 2 of those classes just aren't weighted anymore? Please reply asap and thank you very much in advance !

Roger: It actually doesn’t matter which of your AP/Honors courses are counted in the GPA (try it out, you get the same answer).

I have a pretty bad freshman GPA (3.47 unweighted)
But for my sophomore year, GPA (3.92 unweighted, 4.23 weighted) My junior year, I am taking 4 AP classes. Will only 2 AP classes a semester be weighted for my junior year? And also, do I still have a shot at the high UC's? (UCLA, Berkeley)

Roger: I haven’t heard anything about limiting yourself to 2 weighted classes per semester. Have you tried the UC Freshmen Admissions Calculator?

Roger, I am not quite sure how it works for some classes. My guidance counselor at school says that they do not use Theology and Foreign Language to calculate this gpa, unless its an AP foreign language. Im not sure if she is right though, as it seems odd that they just wouldn’t look at certain classes. You have any additional information to this question?
Thanks

Roger: I suggest listening to your counselor! They can tell you information that’s specific to your high school.

Hello Roger, I have a question, through out Freshman year and Sophomore I messed up a bit. I calculated what my average GPA was including what it would be as a Senior and my average GPA is 3.3. How can I make my resume, or stand out against students with a higher cumulative GPA? Thanks

Roger: I suggest focusing on your interests and skills! Not everyone puts their GPA on a resume, you know.

Currently I am in texas and finished my freshman. Next academic year I may move to sandiego. My current gpa is 4.26 because we have 4.5 gpa scale but , if I move to california, will I carry the same gpa or will they change it to 4 gpa scale? Does it affect my gpa in the future?

Sophmore Year: (Class: 1st semester/2nd semester)

Algebra 2 CP: D F(I had a new teacher that didn't know how to teach, 83% of her class failed)
Body Comp: A B+

Hello! I am moving to California for senior year this May 25. Will I still be considered as an out of state student once I apply for a UC university such as UCLA?

Here are the classes I took in 10th and 11th grade.

10th:
AP European Studies - A (first semester) A (second)
Honors English II - AA
Honors Algebra II - AA
Ceramics(Semester) - A Computer Application (semester) - A
Spanish 2.5 - AA
Anatomy and Physiology - AA
Chemistry - AA

11th:
AP English Language and Composition- BB
AP Physics - BB
AP Chemistry - BB
AP US History - AA
Intro to Psychology- A (1 semester) --- AP Psychology(2Semester) - A
Honors Pre-calculus and trigonometry - AB
Spanish 3.5 - AA

Test for credit- ACT Prep - A (one semester)

What will my gpa be unweighted and weighted? I'm a bit confused. What classes will be considered as honors. I am going to Vanden High School. They don't have some of the honors classes that I took but some UC high school does. Will it still be considered as an honors class for my gpa?

Thank you!

Roger: I think your in-state status depends on how many years you’ve had permanent residence in California. I don’t know which of your courses count as honors courses, but you have enough AP courses to max out the W/C GPA (the max is 8).

Hey there Roger,

I have a 3.60 as my GPA but this semester I got an A and two Bs. What would my GPA be now? My earned hours are 48 and my quality points are 173.

Criminology: credit hours - 3
Spanish: credit hours - 4
sociology: credit hours - 3

Roger: Which class did you get the A in? If you got an A in Spanish, your GPA would be a 3.57. If you got an A in one of the other courses, your GPA would be a 3.55.

Hi Roger,

In the formula above, what does H stand for?

John

Roger: It’s the number of honors courses, which is clamped from 0 to 8. (So if you have more than 8, it still counts as 8.)

I'm just curious, but Roger, are you affiliated with the UC schools? Just wondering cuz so many people ask you questions about their chances and etc...

And also, do UC schools solely use their own GPA calculator when determining the applicants' GPA?

Roger: No, I’m not affiliated. However, I believe that GPA’s are only used for statistical purposes, and aren’t themselves part of the admissions process. The UC admissions process is supposed to be holistic.

But Second Sem: I got all A's (gpa was 4.14)

Roger: Check this site for details about your AP pysch course.

If this is the formula the UCs are using it is high time for a change.
Imagine kid A take 30 classes of which some are APs and score A+ in all classes. According to this his GPA will be 4.26
Now imagine kid B who is a little lazy and only took 20 classes some are APs and score A+ in all classes his GPA will be 4.4 And even if he score Bs in 4 of those classes his GPA will be higher than kid A.
So according to this kid A get punished because he took more classes and study hard.
Remember UCs get hundreds of thousands of applications every year and even a small difference in GPA matters.

Roger: The UC’s aren’t using a formula (so far as anybody knows) to determine admissions. The GPA is not the whole story, because like you say, taking more classes will bring down a high weighted/capped GPA. This GPA is calculated for statistical purposes only, and it does a good job of representing the majority of students. It happens that most applicants have taken rough the same number of courses, so there isn’t much variance caused by more/fewer courses in the GPA. In terms of real admissions, the entire transcript matters, not just the GPA. (It would be kind of excessive for the calculator to ask you to enter your entire transcript though..)

My son is currently taking weighted classes and getting B and Cs. He does have one D. Is it better for him to be in average classes with a better GPA or the weighted classes?

Roger: I think most people believe lower GPA + harder classes are generally better, but it is a tradeoff, so it depends on how much higher the GPA will be with easier classes.

Serge

My son had a great GPA on his 11th grade but in his senior year he took all AP classes and his grades were low he has one F !!
Can he retake the class on the summer to be able to be accepted?

Roger: I think the UC’s can retract their admissions offers if senior year grades are low enough. I’ve never heard of this happening though. Maybe ask his counselor?

I'm entering my second semester of junior year with a 3.53 unweighted gpa and a 3.93 weighted. If I receive all A's this semester, I could have at least a 4.0. What are my true chances with selective schools like Berkeley, Davis, and UCLA?

I currently have a 3.5 UC gpa and I got a 2200 on the SAT. If I do well this last semester of junior year and bring it up to a 3.6, and maybe supplement it with CC courses, what UC's do I have a chance at?

Elmo

How much do Honors and AP classes boost your GPA?

Roger: Each honors/AP course gives you 1 extra point in the GPA calculation. You can think of it as an A in an honors/AP course counting as 5 points, instead of 4.

Do colleges just look at a regular letter grade such as just A or B like on the calculator, or do they look at it as A+, and B+. During junior year many of my grades are B-s and one A- but they are all AP classes. I am looking to apply into Berkeley as an out of state resident.
Thanks

Roger: I think plusses and minuses don’t matter for high school grades.

I am a junior currently who had honors classes since third grade to ninth grade. When I switched districts everything became much harder and my mom dropped me down to regular classes. I currently have a gpa of 2.1 which is a C average and I only have one more semester left til senior year. I'm currently making A's and B's and one C. I have a total of eight classes. What can I do to help bring my gpa up to at least a 3.0 or higher. I know I have the potential and I'm open minded to any suggestions you may have. Thanks

Roger: It depends on how many classes you’ve taken so far, but I’d say it’s going to be really hard to bring your GPA up to a 3.0 in just one semester, even if you get straight A’s. I would suggest talking to your counselor to get a better idea of what your plan should be.
