Oh. I have some questions for you

What is the meaning of life?
Why is the example for this comment box’s name the engineer Bill Joy?
Is it possible to ever get this bread?
Are you secretly a robot disguised as an alien disguised as a human?
Can you tell that I’m bored?

I need a life.

Hi,
I was wondering if the GPAs on the UC website are form all 4 years or just weighted and capped from 10-11 grade?

Roger: I think it varies, depending on which website you’re looking at. For example, if the 75th percentile is higher than 4.3, then it’s probably an uncapped GPA. This FAQ says “UC uses all UC-approved a-g courses a student took between the summer before 10th grade through the summer following 11th grade”.

If my school does semesters, and I took a total of 13 "A-G" classes between sophomore and junior year, would that be 26 individual grades?

Roger: Sounds right to me.

Hi Roger,

Does P.E. count towards our UC gpa?

Roger: Nope, but visual/performing arts (e.g. music, dance, theater) do.

Please help!

I made some mistakes in my application where I put “H” next to my honors classes but did not register them as honors classes. Instead, I accidentally left it as “NH.” I did this to 5/7 honors classes I took. (I'm stupid for doing this I know) Also, I am taking 2 additional AP courses next semester and did not add that onto my application. How do I adjust this? Does it even matter? Will the UCs be able to figure this out themselves? Will they still calculate it into my GPA? (I'm a CA resident who went to school here) Thank you!

Roger: If you need to make changes to the courses listed on your application, you should send a letter to the “UC Application Center” and describe what needs to be changed. See step 3 of these instructions for details. I did this when I applied to college, and I found the process pretty straightforward.

hi,
im an american citizen living outside the United States and im studying the french baccalaureate. i got honors at my schools but can i put those honors on my UC admisssion?(there's not an AP option in the french bac)

Roger: I have no idea, sorry. I haven’t seen any guidance about international schools, except that AP and IB courses count for honors points.

Is 4.22 enough with a 1400 to get into the UCSC computer science under graduate program
Are the gpa’s listed on the UC website UC gpa’s or just cumulative from all four years??? Thanks Roger

Roger: I’ve never been to UC Santa Cruz, and I don’t know anything about their computer science program. I think that GPAs listed on freshmen profile (for UC schools) usually refer to the capped and weighted GPA, but it probably varies from case to case.

Hi Roger, if your school uses both year and semester grades, how can we calculate the GPA from your website

Roger: I suppose you can count each year grade as 2 semester grades. Or did you mean that you get both a year grade and semester grades for the same course?

Hello! Does the UC admission officers only consider grades 10-11 or 10-12? I am currently on a gap year applying to colleges.

Roger: I think the UCs will consider all eligible grades on your transcript, which should include your 12th grade courses if you’ve already graduated from high school.

hey roger,
Do all UC schools use capped gpa for admission calculation? I heard some dont cap it at 8 semesters such as UCLA and UCB.

Roger: I’ve heard that admissions are based on your entire transcript, not just your GPA.

Roger,

I am receiving conflicting information from D. Hasson with Admissions from San Diego State University that a total of TWO honors points from only two semesters (not two years/four semesters); this conflicts with information on your website.

Do all UC and CSU schools calculate the GPA the same way?

I know a maximum of eight honors points can be added; however, I thought two year-long courses (which would equate to four semesters and a total of four points) from 10th grade were allowed.

Roger: Check out this FAQ. My understanding is that there’s a cap of 8 semesters of honors courses, as well as a cap of 4 semesters of honors courses taken in the 10th grade. The calculator mentions both of these points (see point #7). Hope this helps!

Will Uc system also consider or count the GPA of the non-transferable courses? Some of the courses are nontransferable but I already took, will it affect my GPA?

Roger: I think that non-transferrable courses are counted in the GPA, as long as they fall into one of the a-g categories. Check out the last section of this FAQ.

Roger, is regular honors courses ex. Honors English 10 is the same amount of credits as AP/IB credits? So basically, do both honors and AP/IB count as 1 point?

Roger: It depends. If you attend a California high school, then you can look up your school and get a list of all the courses that qualify for the extra honors point.

Hi so I have a 3.88 unweighted and 4.21 weighted (UC regulated) I have 21 As and 3 Bs but and my Bs are all in AP/Honors courses and a 31 on my act is that competitive enough for UCSB or UC Berkeley? I have good essays but not sure how much that would help. Thanks!

Roger: Sounds pretty good to me. I actually don’t know anything about college admissions.

Are college courses considered weighted courses? On the application they go under a separate section so I do not know whether to include those here or not.

Roger: If they’re transferrable courses, then yes. Check out this section of the FAQ about calculating the UC GPA.

If I was out of the country 9th and 10th and received % grades what will that look like on my UC/Cal state GPA if I spent 11th and now 12th in a school in California?

Roger: Great question. I have no idea. But I imagine that they’d ask your school for guidance interpreting your transcript. High schools in California provide extensive information about their curriculum and grading system to the UCs, so it’s not a stretch to think that out of state schools might as well.

Do the UC consider weighted and capped GPA in reviewing your application, or just your weighted?

Roger: I think admissions are based on your entire transcript, not your GPA.

Hi Roger:

Your calculator requires putting in Sat reading and Sat writing separately. Which numbers should I use ? For example the new Sat reading score for me is 38 and writing is 36 yielding 740 total. When I input 380 and 360 it said too low. Please advise. Thanks

Roger: That calculator uses the old 2400-point scoring system. There are tables online that can help you translate your score.

Hey Roger! Word on the street is the new Cal State Apply system had major glitches last application period. (The GPA calc was off, inputting CC courses, etc....) Do you know if they worked out these glitches yet or not in time for the October 1 opening of this year's app period? Does the new app automatically calculate the GPA and report it, or do we still input in manually as we did on the CsuMentor app? Thank you!!!!

Roger: I have no idea, sorry.

As I highschool student, I just took a CC class that is accepted by UC's. I took it in the summer prior to Sophomore Year. Does this mean it is weighted as an honors course for my Sophomore GPA?

Roger: Sounds right to me.

Per this site you don't include CC credits in freshman UC gpa.

https://www.ucop.edu/agguide/a-g-requirements/honors/faq/index.html

Roger: I’m not sure what on that site led you to that conclusion. Check out the last paragraph in this FAQ for evidence to the contrary.

If I took regular Chemistry class in a sophomore year and took honors Chemistry junior year, would that still count as a same class?

Roger: If both classes cover substantially similar content, then I think only the first attempt would count in your GPA.

Roger: Admissions are supposedly based on your whole transcript, not just your GPA.

Sara, the current valedictorian of her school with the 4.66... GPA:

If your SAT score was higher than 1100, I can guarantee that UCSC will accept you.

It is difficult for me to say that the University of California system is preferable, since state schools all over the United States tend to have a more profitable program in spite of their reputation.

When you improve your SAT score to a mid-1400, I'd highly recommend you apply to Penn State or UPenn.

What would be my GPA for UC's if I have 3 honors and 1 AP for 10 and 11 th grade? Also, summer before senior year, I took 3 college courses. I have ACT of 23 and sat of 1090. Is that good to be accepted in UC colleges? Thank you

Do you think it's possible to get a high gpa if I start getting straight A's in my college classes before I transfer to university? I really need to improve my gpa.

Hey Roger! So i was a little confused on the honors points part. Since my school uses semester grades, and I've taken 6 AP classes, 1 Community college class, and1 uc approved honors class, would I type in 8 (for 8 total classes) into the honors classes box, or 16 (for 16 semesters of honors classes)?

Thanks! (Ur famous in my school btw for your final grade calculator lol)

Roger: Since your school assigns a grade per semester, you should measure everything in terms of semesters. So, 16 is correct.

Hi Roger
I just finished my junior year of high school with a total weighted gpa of 4.667 and non weighted 4.0 throughout my high school career. I’ve taken AP and Honors every year of school and am number 1 in my class. My SAT scores were ok but not great (i’m getting a tutor to help me out this summer) I was wondering if it is plausible that I would get in to UC Santa Cruz?. I was planning to double major in Business Admin and Spanish but i’m not sure i’ll get in.

Roger: I have no idea. You’re number one in your graduating class? Congrats!

Catherine
Tue, 19 Jun 2018 18:50:11 GMT

So it's impossible to get more than 4.00 on weighted and capped GPA?

Roger: No, that’s certainly possible. The cap refers to the maximum number of honors courses, not the maximum possible GPA.

Catherine

Hi Roger,

My daughter's Weighted GPA is 3.72,Weighted GPA is 4.00 and Weighted & capped is 4.00. She took 7 semesters of honors and AP's in both sophomore and junior year in high school. Is this a good GPA for Undergrad colleges(including UC's) for applying for Engineering in Computer Sciences.

Roger: Sounds pretty good to me. Which UCs does she want to attend? Some of them have higher standards for admission than others.

Hi Roger,
Is there a deadline for including UC-approved online classes in the GPA?
I just finished the 11th grade and currently taking two online classes during the summer. Since the UC application deadline is November 30, can I include the classes if I don't finish them until let us say late October? Or do I have to finish them before the school start in late August?

Roger: I don’t know, but I imagine that you can ask whoever runs your online class to send a copy of your transcript to the UCs, in which case it should be available well before the admissions deadline. The UC application will also ask you directly for a list of courses you took and grades you received, so you’ll have an opportunity to present it there.
