Yall past is not an adverb in this case. Sure it is modifying the verb but it is doing so as a PREPOSITION, where "the herd" is the object of the preposition. Consider if past was an adverb, then it could be removed without changing of the meaning of the verb. "The lion snuck the herd" has a different meaning than "The lion snuck past the herd." But since it's a preposition, you can remove the entire prepositional phrase without changing the meaning of the verb: "The lion snuck" is the same as "The lion snuck past the herd."
