Roger: What do you mean by “I need at least a 80 for a final”? Did you mean that you need to score an 80% on your final exam? Or did you mean that you want to get an 80% overall grade? Also, does your makeup exam replace the entire 35% of your grade? If you want to raise your overall grade from a 77% to an 80%, then you’ll need to raise your final exam grade by 8.6%. Since your current final exam grade is an 83%, that means you’ll need to score at least a 91.6% on your final exam retake to get an 80% overall.

Im a bit confused on why I received the grade I did. I had a 100% in my English class, but it went down to a 45%! I got a zero on a project that was weighted 5% total grade. By this math, I should have gotten a 95% for my grade overall. However, this was my first project, of which the projects category is weighed 30%. Wouldn't that mean I end up with a 70? I have a perfect score in all other assessment sections. Thanks!
Roger: I don’t have all the details, but it sounds like the mostly likely explanation is that you have a 25% “assessments” category, plus 45% tied up in currently-empty grade categories. Does that sound right? Even though you have 6 projects (?) in your 30% projects category, your current average project score is 0, which means you have a zero for the whole 30% “projects” category (until you do more projects to improve your average). Since empty categories don’t affect your overall grade, your projects are effectively worth 30/55 (e.g. 54.6%) of your current grade. So even though you got 100% on your assessments, your overall grade should currently be a 45.46%. Hope this helps!

Hello so my Final is broken into a lab and a didactic the lab is 30% of our total grade and out of that 30 the lab final is worth 60% of that 30% also the Didactic is worth 25% of the remaining 70%
Currently I have a 86.33% collectively for both classes
The lab is 50 point
Didactic is 35 point
What do I need to get to keep my 86 for the lab final
Roger: Well, the exact answer depends on your current grade in each category (your 30% “labs” category and your 70% “everything else” category). But your final should effectively be worth 35.5% of your overall grade. Have you tried the option labeled “I need something else” on the calculator? It should be able to answer your question, once you figure out what your individual category averages are.

Roger: Have you tried the option labeled “I need something else”? It handles that particular case. You need to tell the calculator that (1) your lowest test is dropped and also (2) your final counts as 1 test in your “tests” category. It takes an extra step, but the answer is equivalent. Let me know if that doesn’t address your question.

I have 150 pts total for a class. I currently have 132/150 pts (94%). My final (and last assignment) is worth 50pts and the calculator says I need a 6% on the test to get a 90% in the class. Did it mean 60%??
Roger: Well, 132 out of 150 is 88%, not 94%. How did you figure out that your current grade is a 94%? Anyway, if your current grade is truly 132/150, then you’ll need to score at least a 96% (48/50) on the final to get a 90% overall. If your current grade is actually 141/150 (94%), then you’ll need to score at least a 78% (39/50) on the final to get a 90% overall. I’m not sure how you managed to get “6%” from the calculator.

I scored a 97.25% in a category worth 20%
I scored a 90.01% in a category worth 60%
My only problem is that my teacher is a slow grader and we had a midterm and final to take, and each was suppose to count as 10% to our grade, but now he's removed the final, so in other words we can only take the midterm if we want to and skip the final.
So basically we have a missing 10% in all our categorys adding up to 10%, how do I calculate that grade with a missing 10% category.
We also haven't taken the midterm yet, and he said for a fact that it only counts for 10% and none of the other category's were going to change in percent worth so I have no idea how to calculate my grade. Please help.
Roger: If each of your categories needs to grow proportionally to replace your final exam, then they would need to each grow by 11.11%, not 10%. So in that case, your 20% category is now worth 22.2%. Your 60% category is now worth 66.7%. And your 10% midterm category is now worth 11.1%. (If you add those up, you get 22.2 + 66.7 + 11.1 = 100.0, as you’d expect.) I’m not sure what your instructor meant by “it only counts for 10%”, but I think proportional growth is the most reasonable explanation.

For Science, I had a 90. Then, I got a bad grade, which brought it down to a 86.70. I had extra credit, which I got a 10/10 and my grade still did not go up. The extra credit is worth 25 percent. Did you mean that the extra credit applies to a category which, along with other assignments, is altogether worth 25% of your grade? What was your exact grade before your last test? How much are your tests worth? How many tests have you taken so far? What’s your current test average? What category does your extra credit apply to? How many points do you have in that category? And have you tried the option on the calculator labeled “I need something else”? I think it might be able to answer your question.

Roger: I assume you mean one-third, rather than 33.0%. If your attendance/participation score is just how many classes you’ve attended/participated in, then your overall grade should be a 80.87%.

I have 150 pts total for a class. I currently have 132/150 pts (94%). My final (and last assignment) is worth 50pts and the calculator says I need a 6% on the test to get a 90% in the class. Did it mean 60%??
Roger: Well, 132 out of 150 is 88%, not 94%. How did you figure out that your current grade is a 94%? Anyway, if your current grade is truly 132/150, then you’ll need to score at least a 96% (48/50) on the final to get a 90% overall. If your current grade is actually 141/150 (94%), then you’ll need to score at least a 78% (39/50) on the final to get a 90% overall. I’m not sure how you managed to get “6%” from the calculator.
I scored a 97.25% in a category worth 20%

My only problem is that my teacher is a slow grader and we had a midterm and final to take, and each was suppose to count as 10% to our grade, but now he's removed the final, so in other words we can only take the midterm if we want to and skip the final.
So basically we have a missing 10% in all our categorys adding up to 10%, how do I calculate that grade with a missing 10% category.
We also haven't taken the midterm yet, and he said for a fact that it only counts for 10% and none of the other category's were going to change in percent worth so I have no idea how to calculate my grade. Please help.
Roger: If each of your categories needs to grow proportionally to replace your final exam, then they would need to each grow by 11.11%, not 10%. So in that case, your 20% category is now worth 22.2%. Your 60% category is now worth 66.7%. And your 10% midterm category is now worth 11.1%. (If you add those up, you get 22.2 + 66.7 + 11.1 = 100.0, as you’d expect.) I’m not sure what your instructor meant by “it only counts for 10%”, but I think proportional growth is the most reasonable explanation.

Roger: It depends on (1) how many tests you’ve taken so far, (2) your current test average, and (3) whether you have any empty categories in your grade, like a “participation” category that has no score yet. Also, is each of your tests worth an equal fraction of your grade? I also recommend checking out the option labeled “I need something else” on the calculator. It may be able to address your question, given more information.
So I have a 87.1 in my class. The only thing left is my final which is 20% of my grade. So I need at least a 51.6% in order to keep my B, correct? As well as low as a 1.7% in order to not drop below a C?

I currently have a 71.63 (C) in my math class. My tests are weighted a 50% and quizzes 20% and homework 15%. my teacher drops my lowest quiz which is a 53.94%, and my quiz average of five quizzes is approximately an 80% (without the dropped) . out of two tests my average is a 59.63%. Roger: Your 4 categories (tests, quizzes, homework, and final) add up to 105%, whereas they should add up to 100%. Did you make a mistake describing your grade categories? By the way, check out the option labeled “I need something else” on the calculator. It should be able to answer your question (once you figure out why your categories don’t add up to 100%).

Please. I really need help. I was working sooo hard to get straight A's, and then on the last test, I bombed it. Great, just what I need. Now, I have a B+. Just one. But I have a question. For Science, I had a 90. Then, I got a bad grade, which brought it down to a 86.70. I had extra credit, which I got a 10/10 and my grade still did not go up. The extra credit is worth 25 percent. And I did the calculating up at the top, and it said I would have to get a 99.9 on my extra credit, when I got a hundred. So should my grade be a 90, or A, instead of the same grade? By the way, my grade was a 26/35. PLEASE HELP!
Roger: How do you know that your extra credit is worth 25% of your grade? That’s somewhat hard to believe. Did you mean that the extra credit applies to a category which, along with other assignments, is altogether worth 25% of your grade? What was your exact grade before your last test? How much are your tests worth? How many tests have you taken so far? What’s your current test average? What category does your extra credit apply to? How many points do you have in that category? And have you tried the option on the calculator labeled “I need something else”? I think it might be able to answer your question.

Roger: I assume you mean one-third, rather than 33.0%. If your attendance/participation score is just how many classes you’ve attended/participated in, then your overall grade should be a 80.87%.
So I have a 65.97% in the class. A "C" is 65% or higher and I need at least that. I have one test remaining and the final. If I do better on the final than my lowest test score it will be replaced. 65% of the grade will be based on exams and final. The other 35% is other stuff. Is this enough information? Please tell me what I have to get on my next exam to pass. Thank you!

And is your final exam also worth the same as 1 test? (In addition to the lowest test replacement policy, that is.)
