I have my provincial exam, and my overall English grade is 70%, my final is worth 40%. If I get a 50% on it, willI still pass English 12??

Roger: What’s the minimum overall grade required to pass? Is your final exam worth 40% of your grade by itself? Or is it part of a “tests” category that, along with other tests, is altogether worth 40% of your grade?

Hi, before my essay was handed in I had an 88% in my AP English class. I handed in my essay which was worth 10% of my final grade, my exam being worth the other 20%. I wasted my time on this stupid calculator, I have a 86 in math and it says I need a 99.33 to get a 88 in math. This test cost me 15% of my grade. This calculator kept my hopes up, until I got a 66% on the test. Thanks a lot.

Do universities know that? Is that fair?

Also: If there are high schools that are academicaly rated more and known to be harder, do universities take that into account?

Roger: No, transcripts in the United States typically contain letter grades, so the numerical grades are irrelevant. Yes, that’s fair. It’s understood that different schools evaluate students differently. And yes, most universities probably take that into account. I don’t know anything about dual enrollment.

Roger: It depends on how many questions there are on the exam and the minimum overall grade required to pass.

Farhan, it will depend on what grade you are in right now. If you're in grades 10 or 11, it will be up to your school to decide on how to weight your exams. If you're in grade 12, your final exams for core subjects (math, English, French, science, biology, chemistry, physics, or social studies) will always be 30% of your final grade.

For my subject/ course, each test is worth something to my final grade. For example, if i get 90%, and it could be worth like 5% of my final grade. What is my final grade for this course if i got 70% on a test which was worth 30%, i got 90% on a test that was worth 5%, i got 60% on a test that was worth 5%, i got 96.6% on a test that was worth 20% and i got 86% on a test that was worth 40% of my final grade. The second lot of percentages add up to 100% if that helps.

Roger: No problem. Just use the calculator. You can type in 84%, 89%, and however much your final is worth, and the answer will be your score on the final exam.

I made a 45, 55, 75 on my quizzes which is worth 10% each. (I have one quiz left) I made a 35 on my midterm which is worth 75%. I made a 100 and 0 on my in class assignment which is worth 5% each. (I have 2 in class assignments left) Lastly, I have a group assignment left which is worth 30% and a final exam which is worth 75%. Do I have a chance with passing the class with at least a C or should I withdraw? The total amount of points to earn is 240.

Roger: I’ll assume that you got a 35% on your midterm (not a 35/75, which is 46.7%). In that case, your current overall grade should be a 42.3%. You’ll need to average at least a 95.4% on your remaining quiz, 2 in class assignments, group assignment, and final exam to raise your overall grade to a 70%.
