I'm getting a 66 in my math class, the term is worth 70% and the exam is worth 25% (there is a 5% worth summative I just took today that lowered my mark from a 68 to a 66). The final grade calculator says I need 2% on my exam to JUST PASS (50% overall). But my friends claim that because my 66 only counts to the 70% term, 66 isnt my true grade and it is infact below 50 (66 x 0.7 = 46.2)—and that I'll need well above a 50% instead of a 2% on the exam to JUST PASS. Is this true?

Roger: 2% sounds about right. Try calculating this: 66%×75% + 2%×25%. You should get 50.0%.

Roger: I’m not sure I understand your question, but it sounds like you need to score at least 11/20 (55%) on your final exam to raise your overall grade to an 85.0%.

Hey Roger, thank you so much for this website. I have it memorized and always recommend it to anyone that needs to calculate their grades/ see what they need to earn on the test to achieve a certain grade. I have a question and some feedback:

Q: I saw you talk a lot about deviations in the other comments, what is this?
F: In your final grade calculator users have the option to select the advanced program. I think you should have users select all the options that apply and then type in the names for each parts of the grade. After this it should display all five (or whatever #) and allow you to change all the values in one spot, rather than having to keep clicking back. Ex:
Exam 1 (x%) ~~~~> __?__ grade
Exam 2 (x%) ~~~~> __?__ needed:
Recitation (x%) ~~> __?__ 85%
Attendance (x%) ~~> __?__
Final Exam (x%) ~~> __?__

This would be visually appealing and a little easier imo. Also, sorry if the formatting is a lil f’d up.

Roger: The standard deviation is a measure of how “spread out” a set of numbers are. It’s measured in the same units as the numbers themselves and in a normal distribution, about 68% of the values lie within one standard deviation of the mean. Thanks for the feedback about the Final Grade Calculator! The advanced mode generates its questions dynamically. In other words, your answers to previous questions determine which questions the calculator will ask next. Because of this, it’s difficult to present more than one type of question on a single screen while still making the calculator easy to use and maintain. I’ll take your feedback into consideration, but I hope this helps explain why the advanced mode feels very linear.

Roger: I think most questions either don’t offer enough information or contain conflicting information (at least more than half). But in all fairness, knowing the required inputs usually gets you most of the way to the answer itself.

Here's my Physics grade breakdown:
5% attendance -> my grade: 100%
40% homework -> my grade: 99%
20% midterm -> my grade: B+ (my score was 60/100, the average was 54/100, the standard deviation was 18, and the exam was curved so that 54 was a B)
35% final -> haven't taken it yet
Additional note: my professor curves every portion of the grade breakdown, even the homework. He says that he "offsets" the curve of the homework since it usually has a much much narrower standard deviation than the midterms. I have no clue what this means. And, I think he curves the total grades of the students as well (?) Also, he said that he usually expects half the class to receive an overall score of B+.
Based on these figures, two questions:
1) Would my high score on the homeworks boost my grade at all, assuming the class had a homework average of around 95%?
2) What letter grade do I need on my final (B+/A-/A) to get an overall A in the class?
Sorry for writing so much, but I'm just a lost and confused first year!

Roger: It’s hard to say how your 100% homework grade would affect your overall grade without knowing exactly how your professor will curve your class’s homework grades. I think in general, there’s no need to worry if you’re head and shoulders above the mean, because any curve that’s applied to you also gets applied to everyone else. But categories with historically low standard deviations (like homeworks and projects) typically can’t help your grade very much, even if you get 100%. Based on the intended average grade of B+, I’d estimate that 1 standard deviation above the mean (e.g. top 16%) would be a safe threshold for an A grade. If you made a B+ on the midterm, I think you almost certainly need to score an A or A+ on your final to get an A overall. Hope this helps!

If I have a paper due soon and it's worth 19 percent (190 points) of my grade...
The grading is set up like this...

Introduction - 10 points (1%) I got a 100 on that assignment

The discussions are worth 100 points each and my professor made us do 5 of them with is counted towards 50% of my grade. My grades for those assignment were 99, 100, 99, 75, 99

The assignments are worth 60 points each, he made us do 5 assignments..they are counted towards 30% of my grade. My grades for those 5 assignment were 59, 59, 60, 60, 59

The final paper, which is the assignment I'm working on is worth 19% (190), my unweighted grade in the class is 783.95/810. What do I need on the paper in order to get at least an 80 percent.
I'm debating on whether I should do it or not or make some effort, the paper is supposed to be approximately 17 pages long.

Roger: Based on your individual scores, it seems like your overall grade should be 779/810, not 783.95/810. But I’ll assume that the latter is more accurate. In that case, you’ll need to score at least a 8.4% on your paper to get a 80.0% overall.

Roger: You’re welcome! My college classes didn’t have fixed grade buckets, so I couldn’t really use my own calculator. Instead, I just aimed to score at least 1.5 standard deviations above the mean on exams.

Roger: That curve is really just a line, where the slope depends on how much your final is worth. Does that still seem useful?

Roger: Is your assignment worth 10% of your overall grade by itself? Or is it part of an “assignments” category that’s altogether worth 10% of your grade? (And ditto for your quiz.) Also, try out the calculator mode labeled “I need something else”. It should be able to answer your question.

I got

-74% on my 1st midterm, 98% on 2nd and 90 on the last one. They are each worth 15 percent of my overall grade.

My final exam is worth 45% of my grade.
Homework is worth 10percent (I got 70)

Homework marks won’t count if I don’t get at least a 50percent on my midterm and exam.

What will I need to get on my final exam?

Roger: Your current overall grade should be a 84.2%. What’s your target overall grade? If you want to get a 90.0% overall, then you’ll need to score at least a 97.1% on your final. If you want an 80.0% overall, you’ll need to score at least a 74.9% on your final. Hope this helps!

Roger: It depends on exactly how your exam is factored into your overall grade. If you have a special “final exam” category just for your exam, then you’ll need to score at least 80% on it to get an 80% overall.
