Roger, you're such a beast. I tried making sense of the UC system and I couldn't do it, I had 5 tabs open with mystifying directives of what courses to count, what is worth what, etc. and I just couldn't muster the mental concentration to tackle this beast. I have insane respect for you not only making sense of it, but also for putting out a calculator for everyone to use.

Thank you,

e.g. Bill Joy

Hi Roger,

I’m an OOS and during the summer of my freshman year, I did a summer course that granted me 0.5 credits. Do I count this as 1 semester course?

Roger: Sounds reasonable to me.

Hi Roger,

I was hoping you would be able to help me if i have 1 As and 6 Bs and my GPA is a 3.14 how would a UC look at my grades and how would they take credit for my grades?.

Roger: Sure, that seems perfectly fine. The minimum GPA for in-state students is 3.0 (and that’s including honors points).

Do you have a GPA calculator for College Students? If not, would you be willing to create one?

Roger: I used to, but it didn’t get much use, so I shut it down. Don’t some colleges have different GPA scales than others?

My daughter is a sophomore and planning to take chem 10 at community college over summer. This is not an honors/ advanced course. Will this add an extra point to her GPA?

Roger: I think all community college courses qualify for honors points.

For a OOS, with a yearly grade system, I have taken 6 courses per year, and 4 AP's with all A's. Will my capped UC GPA be only 4.33? Or should I put it as semester and 8 points?

Roger: Either way, the answer should be equivalent. The limit is 8 semester equivalents (so, 4 years).

to Mary;

A is 4, B is 3, Honors add 1

Current: [(24*4) + (2*3) + 7.5] / 26 = 4.211 = 4.21

After: [(25*4) + (2*3) + 8] / 27 = 4.222 = 4.22

I am an OOS applicant and many of my elective courses such as intro to particle physics and personal finance management are not on the A-G course list. Also one of my core English courses is not Iist either. Would these courses not be calculated into my UC GPA?

Roger: Those definitely sound like A-G courses, so it’s strange that they’re not on the list. Maybe the list is out of date?

Yeah I know the Uc gpa calculation is confusing. Some people told me the maximum honors course is 4 and each course has two points which adds up to 8. But not 8 maximum courses which is 16 maximum points.

Roger: Check out the section labeled “Rules for calculating GPA”.

Hi Roger

Firstly thank you for creating this uc calculator its so helpful. I would like to understand the calculation that it comes up with so please help me out.

I have 24 A's and 2 B's and so far i have 7.5 honor courses and when i plug in this it shows my weighted GPA as 4.21. in summer i am planning to take one more AP semester class. just to know where will i stand if i do that i am plugging 25 A's and 2 B's and 8 honor courses then it shows my weighted gpa is 4.22 how is this possible i would like to know as it only gains .1 increase. please explain the calculation in details.

thanks again :)

Roger: How did you get “7.5 honor courses”? Usually, the number of honors courses should be a whole number. Anyway, your summer course basically counts as a 4.5 (4 for the A, and then 0.5 for the honors credit). Since you’ve already taken 26 courses so far, your next course counts as only 1/27th of your GPA. Since 4.5 − 4.21 is 0.29, you should expect your GPA to increase by 0.29 / 27, which is approximately 0.01.

Hi Roger,

If my school labels a class as "honors", does that count as an honors class in the UC system? I'm out of state by the way; IL.

Thanks

Roger: I vaguely remember that only AP and IB courses count as “honors” if you attended high school outside of California. Specifically, it doesn’t count if just the high school calls it an “honors” course.

Hi Roger, are courses taken during 10th Summer and 11th Summer count for GPA calculation for UC? Does these courses have to be taken in Community college? Does Berkely ATDP count?

Roger: I think summer school classes (even if you took them at your high school) do count, as long as they were taken after the 9th grade. Does your high school recognize ATDP classes on your transcript? If so, I suppose you could include them as community college courses.

Hello Roger,

I noticed on so UC websites that they do care about the + and - with the grades.

For example, an A- is only a 3.7, not a 4.0 and a B+ is a 3.3, not a 3.0

Can you confirm what you wrote that plus and minus does not matter...?

Thanks!

Roger: It sounds like you’re talking about calculating GPA for UC students. This calculator is for UC applicants (i.e. high school students).

Does a summer school grade count as two separate grades to represent semesters or would you only count it as one?
For example you got an A for that summer course....do you count it twice to mimic semesters or would you count it as one A?

Roger: If you only got one grade, then I think it counts once in your GPA.

Do colleges find GPAs or ACT/SAT scores more important?

Mon, 13 Jan 2020 11:40:49 GMT

Hello!
I’ve gotten two C’s in my sophomore year (one in AP World and one in normal Chemistry) and a two on the AP World exam. In addition to that, I’m taking two AP courses this year and another course at my school and that is weighted, but I don’t know if UC’s will consider it as weighted. If I do miraculously end with all A’s this year (my junior year), good SAT/ACT scores, and good SAT subject test scores, will that increase my chances of getting into UCLA and/or UCB? I’m planning on signing up for five-six more AP classes in my senior year too. If I show an ‘upward trend’, is that okay?

Roger: I’ve also heard the whole “upward trend” story frequently, but I’ve also never actually met a UC Berkeley student who had a C in high school. In any case, I don’t actually know much about college admissions despite having made this webpage. So, your guess is as good as mine. Good luck!

If my weighted GPA is 4.9 and unweighted GPA is 4.0 (21 APs all 5s) will my capped GPA which is much lower than my weighted GP hurt my chances at UCB EECS? My SAT is 1580 and subject SATs are MathII 800, Physics 800,Chem 800.

Roger: Everybody’s capped GPA is lower than their uncapped GPA. In any case, your GPA seems pretty good to me.

hey roger,
i just realized that i incorrectly labeled my classes on the uc application - i labeled all of my ap classes as g (college prep classes), and i didn’t see that you could use subject tests for g. basically, a lot of my classes are in the wrong category. either way, my classes will satisfy the a-g requirement, but do you think this will be an issue?

Roger: I have no idea. You could contact the admissions office and ask them to correct the error. I sent them a letter when I changed my AP testing plans at the last minute, and I assume they still accept those kinds of notifications.

Do AP Seminar and AP Research classes count as honor classes?

Roger: Yes, AP classes are categorically included as honors classes, including AP Seminar and AP Research. If you want to double check, you can look up your school’s course list.

Hi Roger,

How would one go about calculating the UC GPA for IB scoring? My school practices 1-7 grading for all 4 years. Also, since it is IB Diploma, will the final score be in the GPA as well?

Roger: I have no idea. I’ve only ever seen guidance for calculating GPA for letter grades.

Do UC schools take into account your regular school GPA along with this specialized UC GPA? If so, do they consider both the unweighted and weighted GPAs for your school?

Hi Roger,
How much do the senior year grades count for admission to UC or any college?
My daughter’s IB chem teacher left for family emergency after first two weeks of school. The school has only had subs in the position. My daughter is currently failing the class cause there is no one to teach it?? Finding an IB chem tutor is almost impossible! It’s extenuating circumstances and not her fault, she really has a tough time understanding chem.
Thanks for the calculator. My daughter GPA worked out to a 3.96.
Thanks again!!

Roger: (Copied from another question) In practice, you’ll submit your application before the end of the first semester of your senior year. So, your application won’t contain any of your senior year grades. You do have the option of submitting a mid-year report to the UC’s, which would contain your first semester senior year grades, but this is optional and most students don’t submit it. This is what I remember from applying for college myself, but it’s been a long time, so things may have changed since then.
