Hello!

I have an unweighted GPA of 3.53 but a Weighted GPA of 4.33. Is that good for the UC colleges? Also, do we include our senior grades? (The GPA above doesn't include senior grades).

Thanks

Roger: Sounds pretty good to me. I think you’re supposed to include all of the grades you’ve received so far, which usually doesn’t include your senior year.

As a Utah student, I find it so confusing to do the conversion. Any tips?

Roger: I’ve never met anyone who went to school in Utah. Do grades work differently for you?

College app szn!! So, I'm a guy who aces tests but doesn't do homework, so my unweighted GPA is 3.571 and my weighted GPA is only a 4.0. I got a 1500 on my SAT (no tutor, couldn't afford one) but I'm not sure if the UCs will see that considering COVID. I have lots of extracurriculars, hold office in about 3 clubs, partake in about 4 more clubs, and do 2 sports, one of which I do for more than 500 hours a year. Also, my family is lower-middle-class. My dream school is UCLA, so how good are my chances?

Roger: I have no idea, sorry.

I am an international student, attending local small private school in Nocal. Q1. I went to school in foreign country during 9th and only have pass or fail transcript. Would the UC accept this 9th transcript? Q2. And, I do not have 2 years of minimum requirement on Foreign Language. Am I eligible to apply UC?

Roger: I suggest contacting UC Admissions and asking there.

Since spring 2020 was pass or fail, do we still get the extra point for each ap/honor class when calculating our UC gpa's?

Roger: I have no idea, sorry.

What count's as an Honors Course? Because I thought UC honors course is different from the normal Honors Course.

Roger: I agree. Check out the “Rules for calculating GPA” above.

I have a gpa of 4.20. Is that good enough for UC Berkeley? I have very good extracurriculars, presidents of two clubs and on the tennis team. I have volunteered for 50 hours, and am planning to do more volunteering. Is that good?

Roger: That sounds pretty great to me.

Hey Rodger,

I kinda screwed up my grades in sophomore year, but I am working really hard this year. If I keep up with my grades, I'll most likely have a 3.6 UW 4.08 W and 4.05 capped. Is that good enough? Will they prefer the capped GPA over the weighted?

Roger: I’m not sure, but good luck!

Is a 4.33 uc gpa enough to be competitive for chemE programs at all UC campuses?

Roger: I suppose so.

Hello Roger,
I am wondering how does community college classes count towards the amount of As or Bs when calculating UC GPA. I am taking 2 community college classes each semester during junior year so totally I have taken 8 college classes. Community college class count as 10 credits in my transcript which is worth a year of high school class. For example, If I gotten an A in one of my college classes will I enter 2 As in the UC GPA calculator or only one.

Thank you

Roger: I’m not sure, sorry.

Hi Roger so I took two 3 AP courses and two honors courses in my Junior year. The honors I took was honors english and honors medical interventions so would these honors courses count as weighted AP courses?

Roger: I think it depends on your high school. Some “honors” courses count, and others don’t. You can look up the full list online.

Do I need to include classes that would be considered a-g, but already fulfilled before grades 10 and 11? For example: two years of foreign language are required for admission, and I took those in grades 8-9 (honors Spanish 1-4), but I also took Spanish in 10 and 11. Do I have to include those grades in my GPA calculation?

Roger: No, I think fulfilling a-g requirements is orthogonal to which courses are included in the GPA.

Thank you very much for making this calculator. However, my question is for the UC approved honors courses, do I only put in the honors courses I took from 10-11 grade, or do I include the honors courses I took in 12th grade. thank you

Roger: You should include all the grades you’ve received so far. However, most people submit their UC applications around the beginning of the 12th grade, which usually means grades aren’t available yet.

On the UC freshman admissions chart the average GPA for admitted is 4.34 for california residents. I have a 4.19 through the end of Junior year. If I get A's my senior year I will have a 4.30. Do you know which GPA do they use for Admitted? The Junior or Senior GPA.

Roger: I suppose it depends on where you source your data from. They’ll usually mention exactly which statistic they’re reporting.

Hi, quick question, in Grade 10, I got two different grades C from 1st sem and A from 2nd sem. Then how do I enter the grades? one A and one C? Or just use final 2nd sem grade as A. Please advise. Thanks.

Roger: You should count each grade once.

Hey Roger, I was wondering whether taking a class at a private university could count as a course or even a weighted course on the UC GPA. The classes total 10 credits. Thanks!

Roger: I think if the course earns you transferrable credit, then it should count.

Hi Roger,

I read that the UC system counts A- as a 3.76 instead of a 4. Do you know if that's true?

Roger: You might be thinking of the GPA that’s calculated from your college grades. This calculator is for high school grades.

Hi

I am a raising senior. I have one class that is A-G requirement. I have another class that transfers to my major. I also have one class that is not A-G requirement and not transferable to my major. Which of the classes will add to my GPA. Will the A-G requirement class be added and will the class transferable to my major be counted toward my GPA. Will wait for your response...

Thanks,
Dante

Roger: I’d guess any A-G course or transferrable course should count toward the GPA.

Hi Roger! I am planning on taking a community college class my first semester senior year. This class is ten weeks so it ends before college applications are due. Will this courses be included in my UC GPA?

Roger: I think the UC GPA used for admissions is based on grades that you’ve already received at the time. I suppose that if you include your grade in your application, then it’ll be counted.

Hi David,

UC will look for High School unweighted GPA, UC Capped GPA , UC weighted GPA and will see how you earned it.Because some people they can easily get 4.0 High school GPA by getting all regular classes. And some people they just can get easily get 4.4 UC capped GPA by getting just 2 honors classes in 10 and 11th grade. you can get into UC's with 3.6 GPA. It's just the question how did you earned your GPA..

@David Kim, I am not sure how anyone can get a 4.75 GPA unless its the uncapped GPA being shown. If a student takes 6 A-G classes a semester, with a cap of 8 honors points (assume 2 per semester and getting all A), that would mean the max GPA is 4.33. Therefore you need to compare your uncapped GPA.

Hello. Thank you for making this site. My weighted UC GPA is a 4.42, it's great an all, but I look on the UCLA admissions page and the 75th percentile is in the 4.7 range. I used up all my 8 honor points. I took a lot of "pre ap" classes (that I got all A's on) which lowered my GPA a bit. How is it fair that some kids who took 8 honor classes, 2 normal classes, and 6 electives, have a higher GPA than someone who took 10 honor classes, and 6 normal classes (assume both kids got A's in everything). Electives don't count towards GPA so it's unfair that someone who took more electives have a higher gpa.

The kid who took less classes that count towards GPA have a 4.8 weighted, while the other person has a 4.5 weighted, even though the second kid took more AP's and normal classes.

Does UCLA account for this? A large part of UC admissions is based on GPA, so it feels unfair that someone who took more classes is at a disadvantage since they have more classes that bring down their GPA closer to a 4.0.

Roger: Sure, the GPA definition has some flaws. But I think admissions are based on your entire transcript, not just your GPA. The GPA is a useful measurement for statistics, but I think your actual courseload and grades are more important.

I am really confused on the 8 capping semesters part. Like how do you have 8 semesters within 2 years of high school, aren’t 10 and 11th grade a total of 4 semesters? And is the cap of 8 per honors/ap class or in total?

Roger: The limit is expressed in terms of course semesters. While it’s true that there are usually only 4 semesters in the 10th and 11th grades, you can take more than one honors course per term. The cap is 8 total semesters.

Hey roger, I'm a current junior. Just wondering, if I plan to take a college class (3 units) this summer for college credit and GPA boost, will the class be counted as two semesters or just one for when I calculate my UC GPA?

Roger: I’m not sure, but I’d guess that it depends on how many letter grades you receive from the class. If you only receive a single letter grade, then it probably counts as one semester.

Hi Roger, do I place all my classes from 10-11? Or only the required/recommended amount example A-G indicates 2 years of language other then English. I’ve done 5years of French. I took French 1 freshman year, French 2 summer, French 3 sophomore, French 4 summer, French 5 junior, and Im taking AP French Senior year. Also for the sections for English that require 4 years do I add 9th grade? Or do I omit from my calculations?

Roger: All of your grades should be counted. The a-g course requirements don’t factor into this at all. Also, I’m surprised that AP French apparently comes after 5 years of French? Must be really tough.

hey roger, my school goes by trimesters. I took 2 summer classes (not by my school), and they go by semesters. I am also planning on doing 4 semesters worth of ap classes outside of my school next year. so what should I choose for the "your school uses _____ to assign grades" cus my normal school is trimesters and my online school is semesters?

Roger: The calculator accepts fractional numbers. I think generally the UCs expect most students to use semesters, so I suppose you could count each summer class as 1.5 trimesters?

Is the UC GPA calculated only 10-12 grade or 10-11 grade?

Roger: Your UC application usually won’t include your year 12 grades, since it’s due halfway through the year. Whether or not the published UC GPAs include year 12 grades, I’m not sure.
