I just finished my junior year. my weighted gpa was 3.43 before the 20th week report card. What would be my gpa after this current report card? I got 4 A's and 2 B's and 2 of them were AP Courses. Will it go up to at least 3.6?

Roger: Does your 20th week report card contain intermediate grades? Do they count toward your overall GPA? What other report cards do you get? How many total classes have you taken so far? I’ll assume you’ve taken 6 classes per semester over a total of 6 semesters. In that case, your weighted GPA should go up to a 3.53.

If I got a C in APUSH (1st semester) and dropped it (school forced it) and got an A (2nd semester) during sophomore year..
What would UC's think of that?

Roger: I don’t see why that would be treated any differently than if you took both semesters together.

Roger: It depends on the context. Usually, I see “UC GPA” used to refer to the capped GPA, whereas “weighted GPA” refers to the uncapped GPA.

If I took more than one year of a Visual and performing arts (“f”) class, can I choose to include only one year in the GPA?

Roger: Use the A-G Course List website to determine which courses count as A-G. I don’t think P.E. counts, but your health class might.

I just finished 10th grade and going into 11th, I am planning to take a summer course in a community college here in Sacramento. Once it shows up on my high school transcript, will it be considered as a honor class or a regular course. Just wondering how to calculate my GPA from a UC perspective ?

Roger: I think all transferrable community college courses are counted as honors courses. You may want to read more about transfer credit.

I just completed 11th grade, my capped weighted GPA is 3.96 and un-capped weighed GPA is 4.24. I have taken many community college courses. When I look at the UC San Diego freshman profile it says "High School GPA 4.00 - 4.27" - are they talking about Capped GPA or uncapped GPA, just trying to figure out my chances of getting into UCSD ? Also, my SAT scores are 1380 (M-780 & E-630) , does it make sense take one more time, does UC system take the best scores between two attempts ?

Roger: That sounds like the capped weighted GPA, but I’m not sure. As for your SAT question, you’re talking about “superscoring”. You can find out more about it on the Internet. As far as I remember, the College Board still lets you pick and choose which scores to send to a particular school. So taking it again shouldn’t make it any worse. (Who knows? Maybe you’ll get an 800 in math.)

Roger: If your AP Calculus AB course lasted 2 semesters and you got 2 grades for it, then that should count as 2 semesters of honors courses.

Unusual Circumstances Question: Do I stand a chance of getting accepted to UC Berkeley, Davis, Santa Barbara, or San Diego with a 10th-11th 3.32 GPA, 3.5 W/C GPA? 10th Grade I had a 4.2 Weighted GPA, 11th grade I had a 2.91 GPA. Junior year I went to a total of 3 high schools and had moved 3 times. I am living on my own at age 18 (beginning of junior year) due to serious family issues. After that incident, I started to do better with a 4.4 Weighted GPA my first semester of Senior Year and had scored a 1560 on my SAT and a 35 on my ACT. I had just been promoted to shift leader, had an internship, and had 150+ hours of community service. I am a first generation college student. Will colleges consider me for admission based on my perseverance and determination to do well despite personal family issues?

Roger: Sounds like you have a fascinating story to tell in the essay portion of your application. You won’t submit senior year grades until the end of the year, unless you get a failing grade (in which case, they’ll ask you to notify admissions immediately). If you’ve just finished your first semester of your senior year, then I suppose your high school doesn’t use the fall-spring semester system? I can’t say whether your unusual circumstances will make UC’s overlook your junior year GPA, but good luck!

Hello Roger I was wondering if you are too retake a class and receive a better grade (i am retake algebra 3/4 i got a C) First question is will colleges see this C on my transcript even after i retake with a better passing grade and my second question is will my Gpa improve?

Roger: I think if you retake a class, both attempts will appear on your transcript, but you can replace the failing grade in your GPA. However, the UC’s don’t consider “C” to be a failing grade.

will a downward trend in unweighted GPA but upward trend in weighted GPA hurt my chances of college admission? I am a junior. I took a total of 9 APs in sophomore and junior year and my unweighted GPA went as low as 3.17 last semester, but my weighted will be a 4.5 this semester.

Roger: I think that’s pretty typical for high school (harder courses and lower grades in junior year). I wouldn’t worry about it.

Roger: I’d recommend doing a web search for “freshman profile” along with the name of your desired school. Each school publishes statistics about the students they admit, and those statistics should give you an idea of how you compare with other applicants.

Roger: According to the UC Berkeley freshman admission profile, the 25th and 75th percentile high school GPA for admits was 4.12 to 4.30. So I think probably not, although that’s hard to say with confidence without knowing more about you.

Roger: I’ll estimate that you’ve taken 16 units of coursework per semester. Since you’ve completed 5 semester so far, your GPA should go up to a 2.48 by the end of this semester. And if you get a 4.0 over the summer, your GPA should go up to a 2.61.

Roger: I’ll assume that your exam is your *final* exam. In that case, you’ll need to score at least a 104.0% on your final exam to get a 86% overall. That’s 206 points out of 198. If it isn’t your final exam, I need to know how much of your coursework you’ve completed so far. (If it isn’t your final exam, it gets easier.)

What is the maximum weighted and capped GPA by UC's calculation?

Using your calculator, if a student

takes 6 courses / year, the maximum weighted and capped GPA is 4.33;
takes 5 courses / year, the maximum weighted and capped GPA is 4.40;
takes 4 courses / year, the maximum weighted and capped GPA is 4.50.

Thus, it seems that UC should further specify what is the assumed number of courses/ year that a high school student is expected to take, otherwise, the student takes the less course load will end up with a higher weighted and capped GPA.

Roger: Yep, you’re right. It’s an unfortunate trade-off, but in some cases, it’s still better than counting an unlimited number of honors courses. The maximum score is a 5.0, but that’s completely unrealistic. Admissions cares about your transcript, not your GPA, after all.

Hi Roger, my freshman year of high school I received a 2.6 GPA, I got an F in math but made credit recovery, however my sophomore year I got a 3.8 and right now in my junior year I have a 3.6 so far, overall for my sophomore and junior GPA I have about a 3.6, will the UC's see my freshman year transcript at all? Roger: I submitted my freshman year grades on my UC Application, and that hasn’t changed as far as I know. However, the UC’s say that they don’t count your freshman year grades when calculating the UC GPA. You won’t submit senior year grades until the end of the year, unless you get a failing grade (in which case, they’ll ask you to notify admissions immediately). Since a “C” is a passing grade, you don’t need to explicitly notify the UC’s about it.

What if I get all D's in my grade?

Do IB Standard Level courses count as honors level courses too, or is it just Higher Level Courses that count?

Roger: The best way to find out would be to search this catalog of high school course offerings. If your school isn’t listed, try to find another school that offers the same IB course. I think most IB courses (both standard and higher level) count for honors points, but it varies from subject to subject.

Do UC's look at the difficulty of classes? For example, if you are taking AP Euro and AP Physics and get one B and one C, will they count it easier than getting a C in a CP class, or do they look at it the same? I am taking all honors and have A's in most of them except for 1.

Roger: Well, if you go to a California high school, the UC’s will have information about the courses your high school offers (a sample syllabus and historical grade distribution). This helps provide context to your transcript and explain if (for example) one of your courses has a historically low grade distribution. Even if you’re not in California, admissions officers will probably be familiar with the level of rigor of AP courses.

But what if you took harder classes by your grades stay the same
For example, I took regular classes but maintained a 3.5 gpa at that time

Hi. I am in 9th grade and received a Failing grade in my honors Algebra 3( 2nd year) course. I received A's in honors Biology and Engineering classes and and did well in my other classes. It was suggested by my math teacher that I may not have to take over the class and that If if I perform well with the more advanced classes in the coming semesters/years that the UC schools would overlook this grade???. I have been misinformed several times by my couselor. Can you please tell me the hard facts. 1) do I need to take Algebra 3 over? 2) if I don't take it over will they still consider me for admissions assuming all my other grades are good and since this took place in 9th grade 3) If I need to take the course over and succeed in the class, will they overlook this course and consider me for admissions?? Roger: (1) You won’t get credit for taking the course if you get a failing grade. Make sure you’re meeting the minimum A-G requirements without needing the course you failed. (2) Sure, there’s no requirement that you need to retake a failing grade. But will your school allow you to take harder math courses if you failed “Algebra 3”? (3) If you retake the course and get a passing grade, then technically your new grade would replace your old grade when calculating your GPA. That’s all they say about it.

Are you sure that the GPA published on the UC schools' profiles is uncapped and weighted? I find it difficult to believe that UC Berkeley's 75% fully weighted GPA is only 4.3.

Roger: The unweighted GPA on admissions.berkeley.edu are probably uncapped. The GPAs listed on admission.universityofcalifornia.edu are probably capped, since their website mentions the cap on their “How to calculate your UC GPA” page.

Do we put grades starting from 10th grade or from 9th grade?

Roger: This calculator is for calculating high school GPA’s. Plusses and minuses don’t make a difference when calculating the UC GPA for high school grades. But for college grades, UC’s only award 3.7 points for an A−.

Roger: Check that the courses you took are eligible for UC transfer credit. (If you took the courses at a California community college, you can search on this website.) You’ll also need to check whether the courses you took count for a quarter or a semester. I think community college courses count for honors points as well.

I got a C+ in first semester Calc BC. Will this disqualify me from UCLA or UCSD?

Roger: I’m assuming you’re a high-school senior and have already submitted your application. Technically, you don’t need to notify either of those schools if you only got one “C” grade in your senior year. Make sure you don’t get a second “C” in your second semester though.
