If I have a 94% in science and a test is 10% of my grade, how much do I need to get on the test to still have an A?

Roger: You’ll need to score at least a 54% on your test to get a 90% overall, assuming that your test is the only remaining assignment in your grade.

I have used your finals grade calculator for over four years, but it took me until tonight to read through some of your blog posts. I am amazed at how your writing manages to be simultaneously beautiful, complex, and still make complete sense. I especially loved your philosophy related posts. I found them to be extremely reminiscent of literary works I studied back in AP English Language. Your perspective on the world and how humans work/think is enlightening, and I hope that one day I will be as wise (or at least as skilled of a writer) as you are. I would also like to make note that the fact that you sift through many silly comments in order to answer people who have questions, and your genuine concern for the people who use your website shows that you are a man of character and good intention. I apologize if I have gone overboard with praise, but I felt the need to profess the amount of respect I have for you, a person who I do not even know personally. Thank you once more for the calculator and the philosophic insight.

Your fan,
J

P.S. Do you have a twitter account that I can follow?

Roger: Thanks! I’m glad you like the calculator. But to be honest, most of my blog posts were written 4 or more years ago. Some of them probably would read a lot more clearly if I had used simpler sentences and fewer adjectives. (I used a thesaurus way too much, because I wanted my writing to sound smart.) I noticed a lot of old books also have really long sentences that you have to read multiple times to understand (think Jane Austen). It’s fun to read stuff like that once in a while, but I think in the age of the Internet, there’s too many things to read and learn about to waste time deciphering convoluted writing. All in all, I’m not very proud of most of the blog posts on this site. I have plans to start using the blog section of this site again, but it probably won’t happen any time soon. My twitter handle is just “rogerhub”. I don’t tweet anything though. I mostly use twitter to find out about disasters/protests/etc.

Hi Roger, I am one of your CS 162 students in Spring 2016. I know it is a bit awkward to ask about this on your page, but do you mind if I ask if you know of any current openings for internship projects at Google? Right now, I am in the host matching process with Google for a summer internship. However, after being in the candidate pool for a while, I still haven't heard back from any of the hosts yet. I have left my email privately. If you don't mind, please let me know if you know of any openings! I really appreciate your time reading this message!

Roger: I’ll send you an email.

How do I learn to get hella good at programming in less than a year?

Roger: That’s a hard question. It depends. It’s like asking a writer how to get good at writing in less than a year. Some people want to get good at storytelling. Some people want to critique literature. And some people just like linguistics and grammar. They’re all very different skills, and computer programming is the same way. If you’ve never written a computer program before, you should (1) take an introductory course on any beginner-friendly imperative programming language, and then (2) pick a goal for yourself and learn whatever you need to achieve it. There are plenty of online courses and textbooks about programming. I recommend Composing Programs, which is taught in the Python programming language and is probably a bit more theoretical than most online courses. Your goal can be anything (a mobile app, a website, or maybe a computer game). Having a goal gives you a concrete plan and objective to help direct your learning efforts. Good luck!

Hi Roger, I have an 89 in my english class right now and am hoping for an A (90%). we have an extra credit opportunity for 5 points in a section worth 20% of our grade. will that raise my grade to an A?

Roger: It depends on how many points you have in that section already. For example, if you currently have 100 points in your “section worth 20% of our grade”, then 5 points of extra credit would raise your overall grade by 1.0% (barely enough to raise your overall grade to an A).

I have an 81% and I took a test and that test was worth 8% of my grade. The grade I got was a 66 percent. What is my overall grade

Roger: Assuming that you have no more assignments to be included in your grade except for that test, your overall grade should drop to a 79.8%.

hey hey hey so i was wondering, when you calculate a high school GPA, do you use another website or do you calculate it yourself? i'm also a bit confused on how honors courses are apparently weighted differently than AP courses?

i used your final grade calculator both this year and last year and i just wanted to say that you're SUCH a blessing thank you so so much for creating it omg

Roger: Glad you like it! Different high schools have different rules for calculating the GPA. In the United States, the 4 point GPA scale is the most common. Try asking a classmate or instructor about how your high school calculates GPA’s.

I have a 85% in my honors Biology class and I want at least a 90, but all we have left is and exam which is worth 20% of our final grade. What do I need to score in order to at least get a 90 on my final grade

Roger: You’ll need to score at least a 110.0% on your final exam to get a 90% overall.

I have a 80% in honors biology, but i want it to at least an 85. The final is worth a double summative (1 summative = 75%). What do i have to get on my final? I've taken 6 tests so far. I've scored on test: 84, 77, 90, 71, 69, and 86.

Roger: In order to raise your overall grade by 5%, you’ll need to raise your summative average from a 79.5% to a 86.2%. So, you’ll need to score at least a 106.2% on your final exam to get a 85% overall (assuming you have no empty categories in your grade).

Just wondering, what's the lowest grade you've gotten on a BIG TEST? Like 50-100 point tests

Roger: Probably around 30-50%? I took a couple of pass/fail courses in college. After the midterm, I usually stopped paying attention entirely, because they’ll let you pass the course unless you really don’t put in any effort at all. So I just bullshitted the final exam (mostly essay questions anyway) and never bothered to even check what grade I got.

Hey Roger, I was just wondering if you could change the UC admissions calculator so that it uses the new SAT format, thanks!

Roger: The short answer is I can’t. I answered this question in the comments for the UC Freshmen Admissions Calculator a few months ago. Search that page for “new SAT” and you’ll find it.

BTW your website is amazing!

I am very angry, because my cis white male teacher needs to check his fucking privilege...he told me that being a prostitute is not a good job, but guess what, I am going to be a fucking prostitute. My whole family are prostitutes, my dad was a prostitute, my mom was a prostitute, and my sister is still a prostitute. I will carry on the glorious prostitute bloodline.

Ok so i have a 53 in my my math class which i hate i have 2 test coming up one is 15 and the other which is my final is 18 i need a 70 to pass plus im doing some extra credit that will probably bring my grade up to a 60 at the most what do you think i should get on the test to pass

Roger: Ignoring the extra credit, you’d need to average at least a 104.5% on your upcoming test and final exam to raise your grade to a 70%. Every percentage point of extra credit will lower that requirement by about 3.0%. If your extra credit can raise your 53% to a 60%, then that would be 4.7% of extra credit (e.g. 7% × 67%, because your current overall grade only represents about two-thirds of your entire course grade). In that case, you’d only need to average a 90.3% on your upcoming test and final exam.

Roger: Your current overall grade is a 86.9%. You’ll need to get at least a 64.0% on your final to get a 80% overall. If you want a 90% overall, you’ll need to score at least a 97.3% on your final.

Everyone at my school talks about roger during this time of year! I have a question. If you go to UC Berkeley, just how hard is it to switch to engineering school? Currently I'm applying to letters and sciences? Did you know anyone who did that?

Roger: It’s easier if you’re an ethnic minority or a girl. Switching to the College of Engineering doesn’t actually change much. You’re forced to take Physics and some EE, your humanities requirements are a little different, and your diploma says “Bachelors of Science”. But students in both tracks take basically the same classes. One advantage of enrolling in the College of Engineering is that L&S students need to meet a certain GPA threshold in order to declare a Computer Science major. If you don’t meet the threshold, you’ll have to pick a less crowded department.

I have an 80.3% in the class. The 4 tests are worth 15% each, for a total of 60% of the grade. My 4 test grades are 88, 83, 77, 60. The professor is going to replace the lowest test grade with the final exam grade, if better. The final exam is also worth 25% of the grade. What do I need on the final for an 80% in the class? Thank you.

Roger: I’ll assume you have a 15% “homework” category and your current homework average is 93.5%. Eliminating your lowest test score would bring your overall grade up to a 84.8%. (It’d also be equally valid to say that your overall grade would go up to a 85.4%, depending on how you interpret incomplete categories.) In either case, you’ll need to score at least a 71.9% on your final exam to get a 80% overall. Good luck!
