So the grading for my class is as follows:
Exam 1: 20%
Exam 2: 20%
Final Exam: 30%
Online Quizzes: 20%
Participation: 10%

If I know that I failed the first exam (let's say a 60) then how much do I need to score on the 2nd and Final exams to get atleast a B+ or B. Considering on dropping the course before withdrawal period ends.

Roger: To get an 85% overall, you’ll need to average at least a 95% on your 2nd exam and final exam (ignoring your quizzes and participation grade). If you tell me what grade you plan to get in your online quizzes and participation categories, I can give you a more exact answer. (For example, if you’re planning to score 100% in your quizzes and participation, then you wouldn’t need to score as high on your 2nd exam and final exam.)

I currently have a 53% in the class but we've only taken one test which was worth 20% and I got a 55. We take a total of 4 test. What do I need to score on the next test to get back on track?

Roger: It depends on how much you want to raise your overall grade. Also, if you have 4 tests each worth 20% of your grade, then the remaining 20% must be your non-test coursework. Is your “53%” overall grade made up of 80% test grade and 20% other grades? Or 50% test grade and 50% other grades?

Roger: Your overall grade will be 15%.

I have a final grade of 64% but I have a 98% on my homework but its only worth 15% what is my final grade?

Roger: If your final grade is 64%, then your final grade is 64%. Did you mean that your 64% “final” grade doesn’t yet include your homework? Well, assuming that all of your non-homework categories are already included in your 64% grade, then your homework grade would raise that to a 69.1%.

Hi Roger
I currently have a 91.3% having taken 4 tests with 4 A's. the final is tonight
Attendance: 10% I missed 4 days due to my mother passing away
Participation 10% I always participate
Homework 40% Did all the homework
Tests 40% took 4, got 4 a's

I have a final tonight, 50 questions (2 pts each assuming)

What do i need to maintain my A?

Roger: I don’t see a “Final Exam” category, so I’ll assume that your final exam counts the same as any other test. The exact answer will depend on your current test average. But I’ll estimate it to be a 90%. In that case, you’ll need to score at least a 73.8% on your final exam to get a 90% overall.

So I have a 77 in my math class, with an average of 76 for quizzes. MY final will replace the test grade I just got recently, which was a 78. My final is worth 30 percent of my grade. what will I need on the final to get an 85 in the class?

Thanks

Roger: I wonder why you mentioned your 76% quiz average (does your test grade also count toward your quiz average?). Do you have a “tests” category? Or do you have a category that includes both your tests and quizzes? If so, how many tests and/or quizzes have you taken? And what did you score on them? Are tests and quizzes worth the same amount? Do you have any empty categories in your grade? (Like a “participation” category that currently has no score assigned to it.) Anyway, the answer will probably be around a 100% minimum final exam score in order to raise your grade to an 85%. But the exact number will depend on all those things I mentioned.

I had a 94% in my algebra class, but I failed my test. This landed me a C approximately 78-75%. My teacher is allowing me to do extra credit to get a B-. How many points do I need to score to get an 80%???

Roger: You’ll need about 2 to 5 percentage points of extra credit to raise a 75%-78% grade to an 80%. You’ll need to ask your instructor exactly how your extra credit will be scored and added to your grade.

Hi Roger! I have a 76% in math class and I got about a 40% on a test that was 5% of my grade. how much would I go down in that class? I also have a test coming up and two tests I can retake, but the highest grade I can get is a 70% on the two tests. They aren't big tests, they are quizzes. Do you think if I got an A & retook the two quizzes I could get an 80% total? Please respond quickly I need the feedback! Thanks :)

Roger: The answer depends on how much of your total coursework you’ve completed so far. For example, if your 76% course grade represents exactly 40% of all the assignments you’ll submit this term, then your 40% test grade will bring your course grade down to a 72%. For your quiz retakes, the answer depends on how much those quizzes are worth and what your original quiz grades are (and also how much of your total coursework you’ve completed). Using the same assumptions as before, if you got a 100% on your next test, your grade would increase to a 74.8%.

16/20 for assignment 1 (worth 10%)
85/100 for assignment 2 (worth 30%)
16/20 for assignment 3 (worth 10%)
My upcoming exam is worth 50%. How much do I need to score on my exam to pass the subject (Minimum pass rate of 50%)
Thanks :-)

Roger: Your current grade is an 83%. You’ll need at least a 17% on your exam to get a 50% overall. (Since your current grade is an 83%, you could also put in “83%”, “50%”, and “50%” into the Final Grade Calculator and get the same answer.)

Hi Roger,

In my genetics class I currently have an 81.51%. Each 4 exams are worth 7.5%, the final is 20% and the lab counts as 30% of my grade, which I have an 86.1% in currently, It is also not factored into my overall 81.51% until the end of the semester. I have 100% on homework which is 15% of my overall grade. And remaining 5% is for attendance.
Exam 1 I had received a 47/75
Exam 2 I had received a 42/75
So at the moment I am averaging a 59% on exams.

What will need to happen on the 2 remaining exams and final to make a high B in class (88-89.9%)

Roger: Is there another category in your grade that you didn’t mention? Your categories only add up to 80%. I’ll assume there’s an additional “Homework” category worth 20% and that your current homework average is a 98.1% (which matches your 81.51% overall grade). In that case, your true overall grade would be a 83.6% when you include your lab grade. You’ll need to average at least a 96.1% on your next 2 exams and your final exam to get a 88% overall.

Roger: Have you told your instructor you’re seeking additional help? When I was in high school, the school counselors would pair up students to tutor each other. It was helpful for a lot of struggling students and a worthwhile opportunity for the tutors that signed up to help. Check if your school offers something similar.

Okay so I have a 90.87 in a class and my exam is worth 20% of my grade. It will also replace my lowest test grade. My tests make up 200 out of 624 points in the gradebook. I got a 77 out of 100 for my lowest test grade and a 79 out of 100 as my other test grade. What do I need to make on the exam in order to maintain an A (90%) in the class?

Roger: Assuming you have no other grades to be submitted other than your exam, you’ll need to get at least a 83.8% on your final to get a 90% overall.

Hey Roger,

I have an 83 in math and I need to raise it to at least a 90 in two weeks. I have three more tests to take that are each 50%. What do I need to score?

Roger: You can’t have 3 tests each worth 50%, because that would add up to 150%. Did you mean that your 3 tests are in a “Tests” category, which is altogether worth 50% of your grade? In that case, I need to know (1) your current test average, (2) how many tests you’ve taken, and (3) whether you have any empty categories in your grade, like a “Participation” category that currently has no score assigned to it. Also, is each of your tests worth the same amount in your “Tests” category?

Hey Roger, I have an 81.2% in Chemistry, I got a 76% on my last test and tests are worth 35% of the class. What will my grade be in the class if I somehow got an A on my upcoming test?

Roger: It depends on (1) how many tests you’ve taken so far, (2) your current test average, and (3) whether you have any empty categories in your grade, like a “Final Exam” category that currently doesn’t have any assignments in it. Also, does your 81.2% average include your most recent test?

I have a 1.78 C.
How many A's do I need before i can reach a B.

Roger: I’ll assume B=3 and A=4. In that case, you’ll need to get 1.22 times as many A grades as you currently have. For example, if you currently have 14 grades that average to a 1.78, then you’ll need 1.22 × 14 = 17 A grades to raise your average to a 3.0.

I have an 80 percent in my math class.
My tests are worth 60 percent of my grade, and so far I've gotten a 70, 80, 80 and an 85. If I have roughly 14 more tests, what would I have to average on those tests to have an 85 in the class? The other marks come from the final, which is worth 40% and I plan to exempt it. Thanks a ton.

Roger: Your test average is a 78.75%. If you want to raise your 80% overall grade to a 85%, then you’ll need to raise your test average by 8.33%, which will require you to average at least an 89.5% on your next 14 tests. However, something doesn’t quite add up. If your tests are worth 60% of your grade and your final is worth 40%, then your tests should constitute 100% of your current overall grade, because you haven’t taken your final yet. In that case, your overall grade should be a 78.75%, not an 80%, unless your tests aren’t all weighted equally. I assumed your tests were all worth the same amount, but if that isn’t true, then the answer will be different.

Hello! I was hoping you could help me figure out how much formative work I must complete in my math class. My test average is a 95% so far (it will most likely stay that way) and I have a final in December that I expect to get about a 90% on. The grading system for my school is as follows:
65% summative (so the 95%)
15% final exam (so roughly 90%)
20% formative
I would just like to know what percentage of formative assignments I must correctly complete in order to finish with a 91.5% or higher in this class.
Thank you!

Roger: You’ll need to get roughly a 81.3% in your formative assignments category to get a 91.5% overall.

Hi Roger!! I had 100% over all grade in my class until i took my first exam that brought my grade to an 87% if i score a 100% on all categories worksheets quizzes and home work, what will i need to get on my 2nd exam and final to at least get me to a 90% or what do i need to get on my exam 2 to bring it up to a 90?

homework 10%
quizzes 10%
worksheets 20%
there are 3 exams total at 20% each

thanks for you help! much appreciated

Roger: It depends on exactly what grade you got on that exam. If you don’t know your exam grade, then my best guess would be that you got a 61%. (If you had a 100% average in homework, quizzes, and worksheets before the exam, then a 61% exam grade would bring your grade down to an 87%.) In that case, you’ll need to score at least a 99% on your 2nd exam to raise your grade back to a 90%. Or, if you average at least a 94.5% between your 2nd exam and your final exam, you can raise your overall grade back to a 90% by the end of the term.

I have midterms coming up and there worth 10% of my grade in each class. I have a 86% in one of my classes, what would be my final grade if my midterm is worth 10%? And also how do you calculate this because I have more classes and would love to know what would my overall score be after my midterms.

Roger: It depends on how much of your coursework you’ve completed so far. So, the calculation might be different for each of your classes. For example, let’s say you’ve already completed 30% of all the assignments you’ll ever have in that class. That means after the midterm, you will have completed 30% + 10% of your assignments, which is 40%. To calculate your overall grade after your midterm, you can use (30% × 86% + 10% × YourMidtermGrade) ÷ 40%. For example, if you get a 95% on your midterm, then calculate (0.30 × 0.86 + 0.10 × 0.95) ÷ 0.40, and you should get 0.8825 (e.g. 88.25%). Make sure you get the order of operations right! If you want to know what midterm grade you’ll need to raise your overall grade, then you can apply a little algebra and get (0.40 × YourTargetGrade - 0.30 × 0.86) / 0.10 as your formula instead. Check out this sheet of formulas used by the Final Grade Calculator for some more math.

if i had a 93 and the teacher dropped my lowest quiz, 80. quizzes are worth 30 percent. What would my grade be

Roger: It depends on (1) your current quiz average, (2) how many quizzes you’ve taken so far, and (3) whether there are any empty categories in your grade, like a special “Final Exam” category that currently has nothing in it. Anyway, the answer will probably be “slightly higher than a 93%”, since your lowest quiz grade isn’t all that low.

RE: AP Bio Class

I posted a comment here before, and here's a follow-up to clear up some things.
1. So we have 7 categories: Classwork/Homework, Labs, Tests, Quizzes, Dice Quizzes, Projects and the Final. However, the only categories that have grades are Classwork/Homework, Tests, Quizzes, and Dice Quizzes. The weight of the categories would change once my teacher inputs grades for the Labs, Projects and Final.

So the final is its own category.

2. tests count the same amount of points (100 points).

I heard from the past students that he drops our lowest grade with our grade on the practice final at the end of the semester. Let's say I get a B on the practice final, replacing my lowest grade (69% on my first test), then assuming my grade in the non-test categories doesn't change, how will this impact what average test grade I would need to end with ta 95% before the final?

current grade: 82.3%
cw/hw: 100% (hw is 5 points each// 4.7% of grade)
tests: 78.3% (100 points each// 82.9% of grade)
quizzes: 100% (20 points each// 2.8% of grade)
dice quizzes: 102.9% (5 points each + 1 point extra credit// 9.7%)

labs: -no grades inputted yet- (10-20 points each)
projects: -no grades yet- (not sure about point value)
finals: -no grade yet- (not sure about point value...maybe 2 tests or 200 points? idk)

I think there are 4, maybe 5 tests at the most left in the semester. What's the average test grade I'd need to get, if my lowest grade is replaces with a B or A?

Thanks again!

Roger: Each 1% increase in your lowest test grade will translate to a 0.276% increase in your overall grade, based on your “82.9%” test category weight and that you’ve had 3 tests so far (according to your last comment). So, if your 69% goes up to (let’s say) an 85%, your overall grade would go up by 4.42% to a 86.7%. However, once you (1) take more tests and (2) receive grades in those current-empty categories, this effect will diminish. In order to get a 95% overall, you’ll need to increase your test average to a 93.5% (ignoring any changes in your other grade categories). If we replace your 69% test grade with an 85%, then your test average will increase to a 83.6%. If you have 4 tests left, then you’ll need to average at least a 100.9% on your next 4 tests to raise your test average to a 93.5%. If you have 5 tests left, you’ll need to average at least a 99.4% on the next 5 tests to raise your test average to a 93.5%. I think it’ll be a lot easier to raise your overall grade by getting high lab grades and project grades than raising it with high test grades. Maybe focus your efforts there instead?

I have a 61.33 in my math class. Your grade is only made up out three tests, and participation points (25 participation points). I scored a 46/75 (D) on the first one. So there is only two tests left. Hypothetically speaking, if I get all of the participation points, what would I have to score on my two tests to pass the class with a C or B- ( or will that not be possible because of the first test grade)?

Roger: It sounds like your participation category is worth 10% of your grade (25 points out of 25 + 75 × 3 = 250). I assumed your three tests are each worth 75 points and your overall grade is just calculated by adding up all of your raw point values. If you get 100% in participation, you’ll need to average at least a 86% on your 2nd and 3rd tests to get an 80% overall. If you want a 70% overall instead, you’ll need to average at least a 69.3% on your 2nd and 3rd tests. Hope that helps!

I have a 65 in math. The tests are worth 45% the quizzes are worth 30% and the homework is 5%. The remainder is for the midterm and the final. It's already about half way through the semester will I be able to pass? ( with a 75 or greater)

Roger: Well, here’s a rough estimate. If you’ve completed half of your coursework so far and your current grade is a 65%, then you’ll be able to raise your grade to a 75% if you get an average grade of 85% for your remaining coursework. That’s because if half of your grade is 65% and half of your grade is 85%, then your average must be a 75% (exactly midway between a 65% and an 85%). For a more precise answer, I need more details about exactly what assignments you have remaining.

Exam 1 : Scored 55%. The exam is worth 25% percent of my final grade.
Exam 2 : worth 25% of my final grade.
Exam 3 : worth 50% of my final grade.

What scores will I need to get on my second exam and my third exam in order to finish the class with at least a 75?

I have a 76. Our 9 weeks tests are worth 20% and our tests are worth 50%. We have a binder and a journal grade which count as text grades. Both of those are 100's. What will be my average after those 2 test grades?

Roger: I assume you meant “test grades” instead of “text grades”. It depends on how many points you currently have in your tests category and your current test average. Also, do you have any empty categories in your grade? What is the remaining 30%?
