I have not done well at all in my sophomore and junior year because I have been through family deaths and personal problems. My GPA may be around 2.88. Do you think there is a chance I can get into UC Merced or SJSU?

Roger: Sorry to hear about that. I don’t know anything about college admissions, so I can’t really help you. But good luck!

Why is class rank not included? Also, do UC recalculate Class Rank. I had a bad freshmen year but I had a perfect sophomore and junior year leaving me with a 4.0 UC unweighted gpa and a 4.4 UC weighted gpa. Note, I am out of state.

Roger: There weren’t any published statistics that were organized based on class rank in the system I was using to collect data. That’s all.

Roger: Hi Mr. Lee. I’m not a college admissions person. I actually know less than the average high school senior, since I only applied to a couple of schools. I created this calculator because I thought it’d be interesting to play with the statistics a little bit. I can do math stuff, but I can’t help you or anybody else with stuff about actual college admissions. I suggest asking your counselor instead. Good luck!

those three honors courses actually do count!! so would that be a total of 8 semesters?? thanks :)

Roger: Sure! I guess so then.

Hey RogerHub!

I am currently taking 1 AP and 3 Honors classes (pre calc, american lit honors, and spanish 4 honors) my junior year. Would that count as 4 honors classes in the calculator above??

Roger: I don’t think the last 3 count. You can check out guidelines about honors courses or find your high school’s list.

Hi I have a 2300 sat score but a 3.72 uc gpa. Should I still apply to UCLA and UCB, even though my gpa is low?

Roger: No harm in trying!

The data you used to make your calculator is not very useful. Your calculator places too much emphasis on SAT scores. I looked at Parchment.com's scatterplots (parchment is useless; only its scatterplots are useful) and I suspect that UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, and UCI do not care about SAT scores at all (unless if the SAT score is horrendously low). UCSB seems to be the exception. The scatterplots suggest that high SAT scores do improve admission chances to UCSB.

Here are my stats and results if you are interested.
UWGPA: 3.66
UCGPA: 4.00
WGPA: 4.29
SAT: 2300
Rejected by: UCB, UCLA, UCSD
Waitlisted by: UCD, UCI

Roger: Thanks for the feedback! I have to say that your SAT score is exceptionally high in comparison to your GPA. Anyway, good luck with your remaining decisions!

Hi Roger! I have an issue that no one I know cares enough to actually listen to, but here it goes...

I have a 3.5 gpa unweighted, and I know that's bad but my high school is in the top 10 in the nation, so it is as rigorous as you can probably imagine. My SAT is currently around 2100-2200, and my ACT is around 32-33 without having prepped (so the ACT seems to be the better fit)

Next year I will be a senior and I plan on taking the following classes:

AP Literature and Language
AP Political Science (Fall)/ American Experience (Spring)
AP Environmental
AP Statistics
Spanish 4 (weighted as a 5.0 at our school)
Advanced Journalism (the only 4.0)

However, with the addition of the journalism course, my GPA does end up dropping from a hypothetical 5.0 (in theory, if I were to get all A's)

So should I drop journalism altogether and take 5 classes or replace it with another AP?

And will the 4.0 still hurt my GPA if I DO NOT receive all A's in my 5.0s?

I plan on majoring in the humanities, nothing math related BTW...

At our school, econ and poli sci are semester courses, regardless of whether or not it is AP or CP.

However, I wanted to take econ (one of the hardest classes at our school) over the summer in advance so I would be free of it senior year, but the issue is, summer school grades go into first semester grades at our school. Another 4.0 (everyone gets an A taking econ at summer school bc its only my school in the whole district that is super hard) would not really help.

So in summary, should I take the 4.0 class and let my GPA take the hit, or drop/replace it, and also, would taking the course over summer be advisable?

In addition, how am I lookin' for college? I am on board for 2 clubs at my school, I volunteer at the local library and museum, and I have a couple of professional acting credits under my belt. Oh, and also I've been told I'm pretty good at writing essays, so I'm thinking about entering a couple of contests. I'm also trying to get ahold of my own TED talk but that's uncertain for now.

Dream colleges (just for the heck of it):
~ USC
~UCLA
~UC Berkeley

Thank you so, so, so much for reading all of this and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Roger: I’ll be completely honest with you. I’m a computer programmer. I like data visualization and research sometimes, but I don’t know anything about college admissions. In fact, I know less than the average college student, since I only filled out about 4 applications in total. I’m quite possibly the worst person you could find to answer your questions. I suggest you ask your counselor instead. Good luck!

Hi Roger, me again!

Okay so.. change of plans :( I think I might end up with a C in calculus AB instead ;___; I got crushed during our 5 day final. Do you think I would still be a good candidate if I ended up with 2 Cs in the most important classes...? Although I might receive a C, I'm still going to carry on with Calculus BC so would that make the admissions offer be like: "Oh this girl is terrible at math but at least she is persistent and does not let two Cs stop her". I know I'm really horrible at math and I admit to not putting in 1000% effort but I still REALLY want to major in L&S CS or maybe even EECS at Berkeley... Do you think they would let that slide if I got good scores in SAT math 2 and the math section of the SAT? Do you think they would also ignore my Cs because I'm a girl? T_T I hope you can give me your honest feedback! I won't rely 100% on your words so don't worry!! I just really want to know where I'm at right now..

Thanks

Roger: Uhh, I still stand by what I said earlier. I suggest you ask your counselor for more information.

Hello,
I am a junior at an in california school, and I have a 3.625 capped UC weighted gap, along with a 2200 SAT. I plan to take the Sat physics Chemistry and US History and should do well(750-800). I have volunteered approximately 110 hours but i did so in an organization that allows me to work as a lawyer and has provided me with other extracurricular opportunities beyond volunteering. I will next year be a four year mock trial participant, and will be the second year president of the History Bowl Club that i started at my school. I have held a paid internship at the non profit CK12 and will be doing so again. Other than this i have sport karate and piano as long term commitments. Your calculator shows me that i may have a chance at certain schools but when i apply next years to anybody's knowledge Which UC's would fall into a reach, at level or safety level for me. Thank You in advance.

Roger: I’m not sure what to tell you..

Hi Roger ^_^

I really messed up semester 2 of sophomore year and ended up with 1 C and 2 borderline B+s :(

These are my grades:
Sophomore year semester 1
math analysis - B
chemistry - A
English honors - A
World History AP - A
Chinese 1... - A
PE 2 - A

Sophomore year semester 2
math analysis - C (T_T)
chemistry - A
English honors - B+
World History AP - B+
Chinese 1 - A
PE 2 - A

Junior year semester 1
Calculus AB - B
AP language - A
APUSH - A
AP Psych - A
Physiology - A
Chinese 2 - A

I'm still a junior right now but it seems like my grades will turn out like this...
Junior year semester 2
Calculus AB - B
AP language - B
APUSH - A
AP Psych - A
Physiology - A
Chinese 2 - A

I haven't retaken the SAT yet so my score for now is 1830... I plan to get a 2100 and stop afterwards so I'm pretty confident I can get that score. I haven't tried the ACT yet but I'm hoping for a 34/35 and I think that's possible if I work hard for it :) I also plan to take SAT 2 math and aim for a 710~740?

My desired major is EECS but I'm thinking about L&S CS at Berkeley because the admission rate for that seems to be higher.. :/ Although I really want to major in EECS, I messed up and I feel like it might be safer for me to major in L&S CS. Since I'm a girl, I feel like that does give me an advantage but that still doesn't take away the fact that I got a C in math analysis and my worst grades are in math ;_;

I read one of your comments that said extracurricular activities are π on a scale of 1-10 and I was rather crushed... I thought that my ec activities gave me a leverage but I'm not so sure anymore :( I'm in varsity badminton (sophomore & junior years), I'm an ambassador for this program at the library that teaches girls how to code (this program is sponsored by Google and what not), I'm the president of this youth council at the library, and I have about 300 honest hours of community service but it's just from the library and volunteering at marathons & etc... I also have a part time job at a well-known place that tutors kids from kindergarten to highschool. I've been working there since the beginning of my junior year and am still employed.

I know you are not an expert on college applications and your calculator thing says I have about a 30% chance for Berkeley but I really want to know whether or not I'm good enough to get into Berkeley. It's my dream school. ;) I'd appreciate it so much if you could give me your honest feedback. I'm not sure if I'm ever going to get a reply too but oh well ^__^

Thanks

Roger: Hi there! I know your Math Analysis grade might feel terrible, but I think it’s important that you’ve demonstrated persistence and continued on with Calculus AB. (You should definitely take BC as well!) I think it’s more important that you’re challenging yourself than how well you do in those courses. You’re right that admissions for girls to EECS is easier in general. It’s not the best state of things, and the professors here at Berkeley are really trying to close the gender gap, but it is certainly true nonetheless. I think you’d make a great candidate, and all of your scores (once you get that 2100+ SAT) seem well within the typical Berkeley range. L&S CS and EECS are largely the same, except that the breadth requirements differ and L&S CS doesn’t have as many physics/EE requirements for those who want to focus primarily on CS. Good luck!

Hi roger, im going to be a senior next year. My gpa and sat do not really match, considering I have a 3.77 uc gpa with a 2300 sat score. which schools do you think I should apply to? I like the atmosphere of Berkeley and Santa Barbra, but i dont know if my gpa is a red flag? thank you!

Roger: Hi Katrina! I think the interpretation of your GPA highly depends on the kinds of courses you took during your high scohol career. You can check out the kinds of information that UC has about your particular high school and see if it provides any context to explain your GPA. Otherwise, you’re always encouraged to write about potential red flags in your personal statement! I haven’t been to any of the UC campuses other than UCLA and Berkeley, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed them both. I prefer the weather in Berkeley though. Finally, I’m not an admissions expert, so I suggest you check with your counselor as well before making decisions. Good luck!

Hi Roger!
Question: How should I calculate my UC GPA if my high school only sends out the final grades of the year? In other words, I only will have my final grades for my classes, not each semester grade. I'm O-O-S, too.

Thanks!

Roger: Hi Ray. I think that the GPA’s are only calculated for statistical reasons, but I’m not sure since I’m not an admissions expert. The system was designed for typical students who do have semester grades, so I’m not sure what to tell you. Good luck!

Hi Roger! I have a 4.19 GPA and I haven't taken the ACT yet, but on a practice test I got a 30 and expect the score to increase for the real thing. I'm apart of NHS, CSF, and am a co-president of the Save a Child's Heart club at my school. I've swam internationally for 6 years now, and my team has gotten first in the nation 3 times. The calculator said I had a 26% chance of getting into UCLA, but would you say I had a good shot?

Roger: Internationally? Canada or Mexico? (In all seriousness, I think you’d be a great candidate for UCLA, but I’m not a college admissions counselor. I suggest you ask your high school advisor instead!

Does the ELC program count towards the overall GPA of 10-12th grade, or does it only count the senior year?

Roger: I believe that the ELC program takes into account your grades from 10th grade onward. You may want to check with your counselor though.

Could you explain what you mean by "If a hundred people like you were standing in a line, would you be in the top 33? That's approximately how many people with your stats get accepted out of 100 each year"?

Roger: It’s just a way to visualize what 33 out of 100 means.

Why does't your high school list include any of the CA private schools?

Roger: It includes quite a few private high schools. The list comes straight from the California Dept of Education, who maintains the API index.

DD

This is an interesting tool. I like to figure out how things are weighted. Keeping the GPA constant (and good), the score/rating jumped from 33% or so up to "holy smokes" for a 10 point increase in each SAT score. I'm guessing test score is more heavily weighted. My daughter's high school API at least based on your current data has a ranking of 10 which is encouraging.

Roger: Hi there. The exact weight of things is a little tricky, since the calculation isn’t exactly just multiplication and addition. “Holy smokes” is what the calculator displays when the models used by the calculator reach the limit of their usefulness. This happens at the high end as well as the low end. Either way, I’d say 33% translates to a “pretty good”, but I’m a programmer, not an admissions expert.

For the UC GPA calculator I am confused...
I'm a junior now and have finished one AP (currently taking three) and my school goes by trimesters. I've gotten only A's and am currently in my third trimester. What would my UC GPA be (there are five bells in a trimester if that makes a difference)?

Roger: I’m not sure how UC GPA’s are calculated for high schools on trimester systems. Keep in mind that these calculations are just based on historical data, and don’t really predict anything in terms of future admissions. I suggest you ask your counselor.

Hello Roger. I greatly appreciate this program, but I wanted to ask you about my chances personally. I greatly want to attend UCLA to become a film major. My UC GPA is 4.14 (having taken 4 AP classes junior year but screwing up and getting a C and two Bs in three of those classes during first semester though I brought them up to As by second) and I have an SAT score of 1880. I am heavily involved in theatre, having acted in 17 productions including two full length plays I wrote myself since freshman year. I am currently the president of the thespian club on campus and am a member of both National Honors Society and California Scholarship Federation. What do you think my chances are based on this?

Roger: Hi HJM. I’m not an expert on college admissions. I’m more of a data and programming guy, which is why I made this data-driven calculator. But it sounds like you’re really heavily involved with the kind of stuff you’re passionate about, which is awesome! I’m sure UCLA would be lucky to have you.

Previously 5 comments ago I asked for help to calculate how much i need to get A 3.8 GPA. If I get 2 A- this semester (Spring 2014), does it mean I have to get all A's next semester to get a 3.8? If I need a 3.8 at the end of Spring 2015 what can I afford to get for grades? And is it possible to get a 3.85 by the end of Spring 2015?

Thank you for the help once again! :D I'm just a little wary whether or not I can raise my GPA in time or not. Especially for next semester when I'm going to be taking on a lot more challenging AP courses.

Roger: If you get 2 A- this semester, you need to get all A’s next semester to get a 3.8. If you want to have a 3.8 by the end of Spring 2015, you can get 6 A-’s and 15 A’s over the three semesters. If you get all A’s this semester, next semester, and Spring 2015, your GPA will go up to a 3.849, which is just shy of a 3.85. So it’s barely possible (most records will round up to a 3.85). Good luck!

Hello Roger! I just checked my UC Application Status and it said I am not in the top 9 percent of my school. I have never received a grade lower than a B and I have received a lot of academic awards. This year as a senior, I received straight A's and my overall GPA is 4.0 unweighted. I took honor classes and Ap classes throughout high school, where did I go wrong?

Disappointed!

Roger: I guess you just attend a very competitive high school.

Hi, freshman year I did terrible. All A's and a C or two. This year i have all A's and 2-3 B's (first semester) I really want to get into UC Berkeley or UCLA. What do you think i should do the next few year to ensure my acceptance. I still have to take SAT and ACT. I do a lot of volunteering as well!

Roger: Find out your class rank. Are your courses all AP or IB courses? Your grade point average sounds a little low for UC Berkeley or UCLA, but it would be understandable if, for example, you attend a highly-competitive high school or your courseload is particularly rigorous.

Hi Could you help me?

I have a 3.67 unweighted GPA in now counting my first semester of sophomore year. I did pretty horribly in freshmen year due to some personal issues, but I know for a fact that I can do a lot better. This first semester of sophomore year I got a 3.85, so it brought my GPA up a little. I've only taken the PSAT and I got a 1610... I also took an SAT practice test at school and I got a 1900. I don't do well under stressful conditions, so I'm not a great test taker. Is it possible to bring my grade up to a 3.8 by the end of sophomore year if I continue getting A's for the rest of the semester? If I continuously get A's by when can I have a 3.8 GPA?

Roger: If you can get all A’s from here on out, you will have a 3.8 by the end of Fall 2014. You need 10.7 more A’s to get a 3.8. You have some breathing room as well: If you get 6 A’s and 1 A- this semester (Spring 2014) and next semester (Fall 2014), your GPA would be 3.80. You could also get 7 A’s this semester, and 6 A’s and 1 B+ next semester, and still have a 3.8 at the end. Good luck!

Hi Roger,
I was wondering if biomedical engineering would be considered under engineering or biological sciences

Roger: Depending on how your chosen university is structured, it could be either one.

Hi Roger!! Thanks so much for this program! I am a sophomore also in high school but I felt like trying this out too! Its really helpful but I have a few questions which would be really great if you could answer. I recently moved from a good private school to a neighborhood IB high school. Would UC's look down on this? Also I moved really late in the semester and did bad on the final and got a final grade of a C in chem. Can i redo this in the summer and get a better grade? Do you still think I have a chance in 2nd semester of Sophomore year and Junior year to get into Davis or possibly Berkeley if I get stellar grades? Btw this is my first C ever on my transcript. I am mostly an all A student with one or two B's. Thanks!!

Roger: I think you should ask your school counselor about college admissions instead. I don’t actually know anything about them. ;)

SAT SCORES
Tue, 24 Dec 2013 01:07:00 GMT

I am a Senior who just applied to UCs

I have taken SAT 3 times, but unfortunately my 3rd attempt is the worst in terms of scores

Attempt 1 : 1930
Attempt 2 : 2030
Attempt 3 : 1900

If i take the highest individual section from each attempt my total comes to 2050

How does UCs handle scenarios like mine ? will they take consider me as 2030 or 2050 ?

Did i hurt myself by taking it the 3rd time and not doing well ?

Roger: I don’t know. There is a good amount of reading material about applicants with multiple SAT scores on the Internet though.

Hello, I attend a high school that has a trimester system as opposed to a semester one. When I have to enter how many A's, B's, C's , etc. I got it says enter one per semester. How should I enter these in. Also, for the total semesters of AP classes, I have much more than 8 because trimesters are more frequent than semesters. But the maximum allowed is eight so I don't know what to put there as well. Could you please assist me. Thanks

Roger: Hi Adi. The weighted and capped GPA used in this calculator is a pretty poor indicator of a student’s academic performance, especially for students of irregular high school programs, like your trimester program. I don’t think admissions uses the number directly in their considerations. Unfortunately, it was that was available in the public data, so it’s used in the calculator as well. Try to estimate how many A’s, B’s, etc you would have received if your school were on a semester system rather than a trimester program.

hi so I put in my data but it said "Your SAT and GPA are too unbelievable in context of your other demographics and the school you picked. "

UC GPA: 3.51 (lazy af and screwed up grades hella bad)
SAT: 2390 ACT: 35 (i guess i'm good at tests)
Field of study: Sociology
Race: Asian
School: ranked within top 150 public schools in nation
In-state

What do you think about my chances for LA?

Roger: How does your GPA compare with your classmates? Do you know your class rank? The calculator doesn’t give you any information because very few admitted students to UCLA had a GPA of 3.51, but if your high school was particularly rigorous, that might not count against you.

i have a question? do UCs count the mid year report? I have a 3.85 uc gpa...but with my mid year report which is ending soon I will have a 4.3! are my grades for senior year only important if I get waitlisted?

Roger: I’m not sure about that. Admissions come out after the midyear report is submitted though, so it’s worth a shot.

Does anyone know how UCLA stats are now? I have a 4.22 UC gpa and a 2110 SAT, and your calculator gave me good chances to get into LA considering I go to a pretty challenging public High School in San Francisco (Lowell). Have LA's stats changed? UCLA is my top choice so I really don't want to get my hopes up if I will probably get rejected. Thanks

Roger: How is your courseload? It sounds like you are an excellent student, and I think you’ll have no problem getting into UCLA.

the fact that 98 percent of ucsb is in top 10% scares me

Roger: Admissions definitely take into account the difficulty of your school and courseload. Don’t worry!

ok so my rank really sucks (top 25%)- my school was extremely competitive in TX,but i have a 4.04 gpa. Everything else ucsb looks for i have, but the fact 98 percent of UCSB scares me.

Do any of the UCs require you to give your class rank? If so, which ones? And is class rank really important?

Roger: Your class rank is typically sent with your transcript if they receive it at all. I don’t think it is part of the application. However, there is ELC, which does depend on class rank. You may want to do some research on it.

Sorry, what I meant to say was that we moved from sand Diego to another state- but we lived in San Diego for 3 years- does this make me in state or out of state? I have heard it's really hard getting in as a oos applicant to any of the UCs

Roger: Did you go to high school in California? I’m not sure how the UCs distinguish in-state and out-of-state applicants.

I lived in San Diego for three years, my dad's been paying taxes there for three years. Does this mean I am instate or out of state applicant?

3.9 uc gpa

35 act score.

Major psychology

Uc Berkeley, uc San Diego, or UC irvine chances for my acceptance? The calculator says holy smokes, but then again is this updated to this year's stats??

Roger: Hi Trisha. A 35 on the ACT puts you at the 99th+ percentile of test takers. At that level, the models used by the calculator aren’t meaningful enough to give a useful answer. They work best for students that have more average scores. (Remember that this is not a admission chances calculator. It only provides analysis of historical data.)

The data is from 2009. The UC Statfinder program was shut down soon after and there is no more publicly available data with the same granularity that it provided. Just based on my experiences, however, admissions distributions tend not to change, especially for the older schools like Berkeley, San Diego, and Irvine.

Do I input only my A-G courses or everything I've taken? (ex: AVID, T.A., retaken courses) Also I took about 28 units worth of college courses, do I include all those too? I have C's in a couple of them, do I still put them down??

Roger: I think that using only your A-G courses in the GPA calculation will give you a more meaningful result. The statistical models don’t fit all students, especially students like you who have taken significant community college units. Use them with a grain of salt.

Declaring a Major or Going Undeclared ?
Sun, 17 Nov 2013 20:12:40 GMT

I would like to apply to all UCs ....I am interested in computer science, is it better to go "undeclared" and take my chances once admitted to move ? since CS is a highly sought after dept, my worry is that my rejection chances are higher when compared to going undeclared ? any thoughts ?

Roger: While it’s true that some schools are more selective about CS applicants, it is also difficult to transfer into popular majors like CS once you’re accepted.
